Product reviews...
This was a first for me as I have generally avoided low carb products especially in bread as I have found some taste and texture issues. Bread often fails when I have tried low carb options so I would not naturally have gravitated to this product. I am a big fan of a lot of Farrahs products so this was going to have to do quite a bit to move me from my current favourites in the Farrahs range.
I loved the size and the amount you could get in these wraps but I guess that is one of those things Farrahs is really good for. I liked the plant-based protein idea but honestly couldn't really tell this benefit or advantage and it did feel a little bit of a bandwagon of fashionability for me personally. I did however admit it was a good thing to be able to mention to a vegan guest who popped in and felt well catered for. I guess the price feels a bit more than I usually pay but in some ways this was rewarded by the healthy tick boxes being met.
The only drawback I found using them for a few days (lunches and dinners) was that they needed to be cut and handled a little bit more carefully than some of the other Farrahs products (like the flavoured wraps) which seem quite robust by comparison. This is probably not the biggest win for me but its good to know they are out there if I am expecting visitors who would consider these dietary requirements essentials.
Tortilla wraps are an absolute pantry essential in our household and I buy them regularly. Whether it is for dinner or lunchboxes I find wraps such a versatile meal ingredient. I am obsessed with Farrah's wraps because they are true to their promise that their wraps will never crack or split. The wraps are always incredibly fresh and soft unlike some wraps I'd previously bought that would be dry and crack when you tried to seperate them.
These wraps especially excited me being low in carbs but not only that they include some incredible plant based proteins for additional nutritional benefits. While I don't limit my carbohydrate intake as such I do like knowing these are lower calorie and feel they would be great for someone following a keto style diet. They would probably also really appeal to someone following a vegan lifestyle lookout for different ways to incorporate plant based proteins into their meals.
The wraps themselves don't taste any different to your regular Farrah's white tortilla wraps so they are great for the whole family and the kids get those added boosts like pea protein without even knowing there is healthy stuff in there. I infact found them great for making the children ham, cheese, salad wraps for their lunchboxes and they love them. I love how the wraps are so soft that you can get the perfect tightness in your wrap that they don't come undone before the children eat them.
I will actually probably buy these again regularly as I think it is great that they have those additional proteins without changing the taste and it's always a win if the whole family enjoy them!
I love the description "ultimate power-house of wraps!" It makes me think of a simple wrap as a supercharged electronic booster that can impart magical powers to those who consume it so that they can travel at warp speed, using their x-ray vision and anti-gravity limbs to fly above lesser beings who have not been lucky enough to taste these wraps. But I guess this description should not be taken too literally; however, it did make me smile.
Seriously, these wraps are a good choice for anyone who is on a carb- or calorie-controlled regime. The stats for both are printed on the outside of the pack, and the font is so big that you cannot fail to see it. It is possible for people on a limited eating plan to miss out on some essential food areas; the extra ingredients in this wrap aim to address that issue by including hemp and pea proteins, something which would also appeal to vegetarians. All of this means that several people with different needs can be accommodated by the same product. This is a real bonus for busy people who do not have the time to create individual menus for each person.
The taste of these wraps is no different from that of any regular wrap - it would be difficult to distinguish one from the other if you did not have the packaging to refer to. I prepared them in two quite different ways, both based on conventional recipes; it would be impossible to say which was better. The first was complemented by a selection of salad vegetables mixed with a dressing made of garlic mayonnaise and chopped hard-boiled eggs. The wrap was rolled tight around the filling and secured with a toothpick and then overwrapped in foil. We took these filled wraps on a picnic; it was a potluck so I contributed four wraps, each cut in half.
The other way they were used was to replace bread to accompany a seafood chowder. The chowder was very rich, so I thought a pan-warmed wrap might be a lighter option to regular bread. This proved to be a popular choice; I was sorry I had not brought more as there was more than enough chowder for everyone but the wraps ran out! Something to remember for the next time I have a bright idea. I had also hoped to use them in place of roti the next time we had Indian food, but that will have to wait until I can get more.
