On a busy week night nothing beats a meal kit like this and Farrah's meal kits are second to none. With the quality of the tortilla wraps and the great flavours your guaranteed a dinner the whole family will love. In fact this particularly meal kit with the delicious coated pieces of crispy chicken was a huge winner in our house with all the children and adults requesting we have them again.
The instructions are really easy to follow and the meal itself is quick and easy to prepare and cook. I loved that I was able to just oven bake the chicken and it still be lovely and crispy tasting like fried crispy chicken without actually having to fry the chicken in lots of unhealthy oil. The crispy coating also had some delicate seasoning that gave it a really great flavour. The wraps like all Farrah's wraps were beautifully soft and folded perfectly to make the delicious tacos. We love the accompanying mayo and I'm now left wishing and hoping that it is available to buy seperately too.
My daughter noticed on the packaging that it gives you some extra serving suggestions and really loved the suggestion of crispy fish tacos. As we had used this kit to make the crispy chicken I had to buy a new kit so she could try it out with fish instead of chicken and this was just as popular so I believe we will be buying it regularly and changing it up with new ingredients.
I like a good meal kit that isn't too expensive, doesn't require a lot of work and feeds the family. I have two adults and three kids, on a typical night and I am always concerned that what comes with the meal kit won't be enough. This kit says it gives you enough to make 10 tacos, which on a day my eldest seems to have hollow legs, this wouldn't be enough to feed us all, but I had some taco tortillas left over from another meal, so popped them on the table just in case. I made this vegetarian, using nutmeat, which I cut into strips and then coated in a little oil and the spice mix. I got it out of the oven after 15 minutes and thought it was good but not quite crispy enough, gave it another ten minutes and it was perfect.
My daughter and I grated some carrots, very finely chopped up cabbage and thinly sliced some onion (no red onion in the cupboard but we adults didn't mind. I put everything on the table and let everyone pack their own taco, which led to a more tortilla than fillings kind of meal for the youngest and an almost overflowing one for my eldest. The kids all tried a little of the sauce but didn't like it, where as us adults enjoyed it and between the two of us we finished it. My three kids all opted for garlic mayo, which they all agreed went well with it. We had plenty of food which means that we did end up needing the extra tortillas, with a few of us wanting to have three each. This was a nice and easy kit, just needed more tortillas.
Finding new and exciting meal ideas that the whole family will enjoy seems a bit daunting some weeks. Recently my children have become partial to eating Mexican food, nachos and tacos always being the top of the request list. I had seen at my local supermarket one day that Farrah's had some new kits available, however I had run out of budget, so vowed I would try in the future when money was available. When I saw that KIWIreviews had some of these kits available for request, I leaped at the chance to try.
The packaging is quite busy on the front of the box, but in a way that works and grabs your attention. The vibrant colours teamed with the mouthwatering picture of the delicious tacos, the brand name Farrah's is bold and easy to read, and there is certainly no question about what flavour the kit is. This taco kit comes with enough ingredients to make 10, included in the box are 10 flour tortillas, crispy chicken spice mix, and some chipotle and lime mayo. On the reverse of the box Farrah's has included a recipe for their version of the Crispy Chicken Tacos, I decided I would follow this recipe. The contents of this kit contains no artificial flavours or colours, and are vegetarian and vegan friendly.
When it came time to make the tacos for dinner, I thoroughly coated my chicken in the spice mix and baked in the oven. The spice mix was a beautiful orange and is sort of a breadcrumb texture. As the chicken was cooking the spice mix was getting to be a nice golden colour. The tortilla size was smaller than I expected, warming them in the pan didn't take too long, only a few seconds, and made the tortillas easier to roll up. I personally found when it was time to assemble the tacos they could not hold a generous amount of filling, they were the perfect size for the children, however I found I needed several to satisfy my hunger. The flour tortilla is a smooth consistency and just the right thickness. The children decided they did not want to try the mayo, all the more for me! The lime in the mayo provides a nice freshness to the chipotle and the chicken.
Personally I enjoyed this taco kit and think the flavours work well, however to feed my tribe I would have to purchase two kits each time, which would be quite costly. I always enjoy trying Farrah's products, and am proud to support a high quality, New Zealand brand.
I cannot speak highly enough of this product. It fulfilled - and exceeded - our expectations. We followed the printed instructions quite closely, rolling small pieces of chicken in the spice mix and baking them in a single layer. They were quick to crisp, and it was all I could do to stop myself from eating the lot straight from the oven. The spice mix, which was included in the box, was delicious; it brought out the flavour of the chicken and would not have been out of place in a good restaurant. It had a suggestion of heat to it but not enough to discourage the more conservative eaters (my aunt and cousin). They were just as impressed as I was.
Having prepared the meat and removed it from sight so that it would not disappear before we sat down to eat, I warmed the tortillas and put a bowl of mixed salad on the table. The kit comes with a sachet of flavoured mayo; I put this into a small bowl so people could help themselves if they wanted it. My aunt was impressed that I had more or less replicated the picture on the kit box! I shared out the chicken so that everyone would get a fair share, but everyone helped themselves to salads and mayo. The mayo was another pleasant surprise; it had a subtle lime flavour and a hint of chipotle, just enough to intrigue but not enough to take over the chicken spices.
Everyone commented on the crunch of the chicken inside the soft tortillas - it was a satisfying blend of textures, designed to appeal to most people. The four of us all gave the meal the thumbs up; my aunt asked if the kits were available in stores, and my cousin said she really liked the way the chicken was baked as it was not at all fatty. She likes to eat healthy food (as we all do) and this product fulfilled her requirements in that respect. There is the added bonus that the meal was very quick to assemble: I timed it and it took just 20 minutes from box to table. The chicken took ten minutes of that 20 to cook as I had cut the pieces quite small; larger chunks would obviously have needed more cooking time.
Finally, we loved the packet design. It combines bright yellow and orange, colours that are bound to appeal in mid winter. All necessary information is included in easy to read fonts (black on yellow) and the tacos in the cover picture were indeed exactly like the tacos we made. Affirmation indeed!
Crispy Chicken is one of the staple meals in our house, my husband and kids love it, it's easy and quick to prepare and relatively healthy too. We normally buy a competitor's brand and I was eager to try Farrah's take on this great meal to see if it was just as good or even better than the one we currently use.
The packaging is bright and colourful and shows a realistic expectation of what your finished meal will look like (depending on if you decide to use all the suggested extra salad ingredients). I find this a very important feature as some meals turn out so different to how they are advertised it leaves you feeling like you've failed and that's not a great start to dinner!
The instructions on the back of the packet were very simple and easy to follow and in a great order so you weren't left waiting for one thing for ages. It told you to put the oven on to preheat, then coat the chicken and bake and while it was baking I got all the salad ingredients (I improvised here and just used our usual salad ingredients that I always have on hand) ready and by the time I was finished with that, the chicken was ready to come out of the oven so I could put together all the wraps.
Now, my kids are huge fans of this meal usually but I noticed the Tomato and Lime sauce that comes with it is different to what my kids usually have, I gave my fussiest child a taste of the sauce before I used it to make sure she'd want it - she promptly screwed up her nose and said no thanks. I thought my other child, who eats everything, would be happy to have it so I lightly drizzled it over his, my husband's and mine. This was a mistake, my son had a bite and screwed up his face saying he didn't like the chicken, we managed to narrow down his dislike to the actual sauce and I scrapped the remaining off his taco and he happily ate everything else. My husband and I didn't mind the sauce but it wasn't our favourite flavour and we ended up adding some sour cream to it. It wasn't a spicy sauce or anything but very tomato based and nothing like what we usually have with this meal so I guess our expectations were a little flawed.
The best thing about this pack was the crispy seasoning mix, it was delicious and cooking it in the oven made it all the more crispy. If we have learnt anything from this meal, it's that the best way to cook the crispy chicken is via the oven (not frying like other packets suggest) and that is how we will be cooking any future crispy chicken we have.
I think the general consensus with my family was that they were ok (without the sauce) but probably wouldn't stop us from buying our usual one. However, I did notice they have decided to sell the crispy seasoning mix separately and we would definitely purchase that and make our own tacos/wraps.
Our family and the kids especially, love having tacos, they love being able to build thier own tacos and it always makes for a great family meal. This particular brand was new to us but we were keen to dive on in.
The pack comes with almost everything you need, soft taco shells, crispy seasoning for the chicken and tomato and lime sauce. The first thing that I will say and I cannot emphasize this enough, follow the cooking instructions for the chicken! I admit I was a little lazy and didn't really read the instructions and ploughed ahead coating the chicken and cooking it.....in the frypan. The taste was still great but we didn't get the crispy texture we should have got. Learn from us!!! That aside, it's still a really easy meal especially on nights where you want something quick, throw the chicken in the oven, prepare the other components, put it all on the table and it's perfect. I'm really pleased that this was still really easy to put together.
We did further ignore the instructions and went for our favourite fillings, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and cheese. My partner and I also used the tomato and lime sauce drizzled over it all and it gave a really nice tang that we felt finished off the tacos perfectly. The kids loved the taste of the chicken even with my unique cooking style and there lots of exclamations of YUM!
Our only grizzle was that we felt like we needed more taco shells as our family of four wanted more once we were done. We would definitely get these again!
We all love tacos, so I chose a time when there were just three of us to test this packet as I wanted to make sure there would be enough to go round. I knew I would probably eat three, so used that as a gauge for the number of people to include. I had to go shopping that afternoon so I decided to follow the recipe exactly for six of the tacos (using chicken) and put haloumi in the other four as one of my friends does not eat meat. I even got an avocado at a reasonable cost so it was all good, although I decided one would do!
Following the instructions on the packet was simplicity itself. I was cooking at my friend's house and he has a state-of-the-art kitchen with plenty of bench space, so I was able to spread out all the ingredients to streamline the assembling process. Once the six chicken tenderloins were baking in the oven, I cut up the haloumi and put it on another shelf - it cooks in half the time and I wanted both ingredients to be ready together.
The lime was perfectly ripe; I tasted a little of the juice and it was quite sweet. That was a plus as limes do vary in quality, but I had been determined to follow the recipe exactly and not make do with a lemon from the garden! I also cheated on the greens; the recipe suggested a quarter each of lettuce and cabbage, but we were going to be away from home for several days after this meal. I did not want to leave a collection of rapidly wilting leftover greens in the fridge, so I found a pre-packaged combo in the local supermarket which contained lettuce, green cabbage, red cabbage, and a little carrot, so thought that was a pretty good substitute and it would all get used!
Everyone was delighted with the crispy spice mix. I had used it for both the chicken and the haloumi, and it went well with both. My friend had three of the haloumi tacos and I had the fourth with two of the chicken varieties as I wanted to taste both. His wife had the remaining four chicken tacos - she initially took three but thought they were so nice I suggested she have the last one as well. It did not take much persuading; she was hungry and clearly enjoying them.
We all found the spice very tasty. It had a little zing to it but was not too hot; the tomato and lime sauce, on the other hand, was really mild. One thing we all noticed however was that, even with the sauce, the result was a little too dry so we ended up putting a dollop of mayonnaise on top of each one. That made it pleasantly moist and we found the tacos much easier to eat like that.
Will I get them again? Almost certainly. Next time I would like to try them with prawns or salmon, or even with raw fish in coconut. There are lots of fishy possibilities! And they go perfectly with cold ginger beer which was our drink of choice. A thumbs up from all three of us.
When it comes to buying wraps and tortilla's Farrah's is the only brand I buy and trust, the quality is always amazing, so fresh and it never tears, wraps or cracks whether it has been heated or not. When making wraps or taco's crumbed chicken is an absolute favourite filling of mine and 9 times out of 10 this is exactly what I will use in these, though I must admit I normally crumb my own chicken with breadcrumbs and not a lot else. When I saw that Farrah's had released a crispy Chicken Taco Meal Kit I was rather excited, it was like a dream come true and surely something that myself and the rest of my family were sure to love.
In true Farrah's style, the packaging is amazing, bright and colorful and it lets you know absolutely everything you could possibly need to know about the product and more. I love that it lists exactly what is included in the meal kit 10x flour tortillas, crispy chicken spice mix and tomato and lime sauce, the spice level is also made very well aware on the front of the box which is handy. The back has very clear instructions for preparing your delicious meal and lists everything you need to add to make it complete, it also has an alternative suggestion for making fish tacos in case you weren't feeling like chicken.
The meal couldn't have been easier to prepare, I simply shook my chicken tenderloins in a snaplock bag with a small amount of oil and then added the crispy chicken spice mix and shook it some more and then placed the crumbed chicken in the acti-fryer to cook for 15 minutes. While the chicken was cooking I prepared my salad vegetables, I opted to use what I had on hand instead of going to the shops to get the suggested ingredients so I ended up with lettuce, tomato, grated carrot, and cheese. Heating the tacos in the microwave for 30 seconds had warmed them perfectly and softened them slightly and they were ready to fill, in went the vegetables followed by the chicken and lastly the Tomato and Lime sauce.
Tastewise these were so good, the chicken was golden and crunchy and had quite a zesty taste to it which I guess was lime, Miss 5 declared "it is super yummy and I just love how crunchy it all tastes", my partner agreed and said the sauce made the meal complete, it had a good balance between tomato and lemon flavours. We only ended up making a total of 6 tacos with the meal kit which was just the perfect amount for our family of 3 when served with a side of wedges to make a very satisfying meal so with the leftover tacos we used these for lunch today and they were great with salad vegetables and ham.
Another absolutely delicious propduct for Farrah's which is going to pop into my supermarket trolley tomorrow, I will absolutely be buying these regularly and recommending them to other Mexican food lovers that I know of.
