I recently had the very frustrating job of house hunting but with a time constraint and anyone in Auckland knows how hard it can be to find something suitable for a family. I was incredibly lucky to have good friends who made the amazing offer of letting me and my three kids rent a cabin and put it on their front lawn and share expenses of food etc, so similar to flatting but the bedroom was outside.
The cabin was big enough to fit a queen size bed along with a single bed and a small bookshelf, I must admit it was a really tight squeeze but at least we were safe and warm. We rented the cabin in July and after I had some curtains I noticed that the cabin was really toasty warm, in fact I have never been that warm in winter in New Zealand. I left the windows open during the day and by night the condensation was gone so every night we were warm and dry.
A few things I would change is how easy it is to open the door by sticking a hand through the window that is next to the door as in summer (we had the cabin until the end of January) we had to sleep with only one window open due to how easily it could be opened by having the window by the door open and it was just a bit too warm. I would add an extra window so it would be easier to have two windows open during summer.
I dealt with the west Auckland franchise and the staff were great, I could arrange delivery for the next day and I had no problems during the time we needed the cabin. When we wanted to return the cabin and end the hire is when I hit some slight snags. Nowhere on the paperwork or website does it mention anything about what notice period was required to cancel the contract so I made sure all the cleaning had been done and gave them a call. I was told that they need two weeks notice so immediately I knew that my bond was going to have 2 weeks rent deducted from it. I told the owner the cabin is ready for immediate pick up and it took him over a week to check his diary to see when a driver was available to pick it up. The refund he said would be done within 3 days took a further 10 days to process.
I would deal with them again if necessary but I would know the refund will take a while to be proessed.
