Product reviews...
After reading the previous review, and being quite keen to give candle-making a go after seeing an artisan doing live productions at a 'Gypsy Fair' a little while ago, I decided to go out and get this kit. It was easy to find, and was, thankfully, on sale at the time. This made it a double-good deal for me, because not only did it have almost everything needed, but it was within my price-range.
Since the kit is lacking sheet wax, you may wish to explore suitable local supplies. From the same supplier you can also source more top-quality wicking and assorted types of wax pellets for mould-pouring, including de-coloured white pellets great for colouring in your preferred manner.
Overall, a great kit, especially as we head into winter and indoor activities are a must for those with young family members, and a great way to explore hand-made gifts for friends, family, and something special to give to someone special. Nothing quite says "I really do love you" like handmade scented candles. I think... Ummm... actually, I HOPE...
This kit comes with almost everything you need. All you will need on top of this is some old pots you can melt the waxes in, some extra candle moulds and some extra waxes such as sheet beeswax. This last one is going to be really hard to find because of the bee-mite scare a few years back. Some careful web searching should help. Here's a starter for you: -click here-
I found the book covered a lot more projects than could be made with the included 'ingredients' but the kit contained all you will need to learn the basics and then you can expand your skills, and the range of candles you make, from there.
The book was easy to follow and full of great information, ideas and inspiration. The colour photos were awesome and gave me the drive to stick with it, even when my attempts to make candles fell apart at the seams, literally. But don't give up. At least these failures can be recycled.
The kit fits really well on an average bookshelf, can be refilled with replacement stocks from your nearest quality hobbyist store, or any number of internet stores. You can fit even more in if you pull out and trash the shaped plastic lining.
This is an excellent kit and well worth considering for any arts-n-craft buff who is interested in waxcraft. I have already started to look through some of my old wooden models and sculptures and purchased some soft latex gum suitable to make my own reusable moulds, since they are near-impossible to find in NZ anymore.
