Product reviews...
There are so many different toys and crafts on the market now, it gets harder and harder to know what is worth spending your hard earned cash on, and what you are better to just keep walking by. At Christmas time, my children get to pick three gifts they really want mum and dad to buy for them. I figure this is a great way to stop me from buying a lot of stuff that will not interest them. So I had to have a wee laugh when two of my kids requested whipple kits, my girl I expected, my 12 year old boy I did not (however he wants to be a chef and loves food so why not lol).
The bonus came when I went shopping for the whipple set for them: buy one and get one free. What a bonus. One of the sets I purchased was the cupcake set. These great sets are so fun to play with, and they look so real it is actually amazing. Note though they are not real, they are just a fun sweet craft set...not edible! You make the cupcakes and then decorate with frosting and add rhinestones and beads to 'pretty' it up.
The instructions are clear and simple, it is easy to use right down to the frosting bag. Miss 7 was able to create away happily without needing any help. Even her 12 and 13 year old brothers created with her, I mean it's cupcakes, who doesn't love them...real or otherwise :) Our only complaint would be the frosting. Although it appears dry after a couple hours it does take up to a couple of days before all the frosting is completely set, inside and out. But other than that it really is a fun we set to play with.
I purchased this for my God-daughter, who is into anything and everything crafty. With a talented cake maker/decorator for a Mum - I thought this was something she would enjoy, and I was not wrong!
It has been a very very popular activity for her, and also for my own 3.5 year old daughter, with a bit of help from us.
My god-daughter oooo-d and ahhh-d over all the items as they came out of the box, wanting to see what was next. Of course the sparkly items immediately caught her eye, and she was busy designing before we had even laid it all out!
i was a bit sceptical that there would be enough "Whipple-cream" to do all the things she wanted to do, but in fact it goes an awful long way.
The lesson sheet is straightforward and easy to follow - and gives you some great ideas. Some of the designs are a bit tricky - so try them out first, then use them on your creations!
The only thing I did not like was that we wanted to create more things, and had run out!!! Depending on how many are doing this at a time, could be worth getting more than the one box.
These are a great activity that give the child something to create and keep - or give away if they are that way inclined.
A really great activity for a rainy day, or school holidays, or for a crafty minded God-daughter like mine!!
Well this is something that has proven to be exceedingly popular with the craft mad females in our family.
First up unpacking the Whipple set, I was impressed by the range of materials and decorations provided. I was doing this with Miss NZGG and a friend and we were a little dubious at the amount of Whipple creme provided, this worry was very quickly proven to be unfounded though! Pleasantly, a little of this goes a long way so you have no worries about using the lesson/practise sheet, you're not going to be leaving yourself short and it's worth practising the patterns.
Having had a recent horrible experience icing Miss NZGG's birthday cake, I was a little wary of this to be honest. Really didn't need to be. It didn't take much practise before we all had the hang of things, Miss NZGG wanted a little help but I suspect that was more just her rather than an indication of skill level required. There were plenty of decorations provided and we actually found there were almost more than we needed as we had been using them cautiously, there are definitely enough provided that you can let your imagination run wild. We all had fun coming up with out different designs, the possibilities are endless. I think the only downside is that with 3 of us doing this, it was over far too quickly and we could have happily kept going longer. Perhaps we should think of getting a pack each next time?
Speaking of which, we may have to do just that, my mother-in-law spotted a keyring Whipple Cupcake dangling engagingly from Miss NZGG's bag and enquired hopefully should there be a spare one looking for a home. Given the other 2 key chain ones have pride of place decorating the knitting bags of my friend and I, the answer was not likely! Instead I'll be buying at least one other set, perhaps two though, so that Miss NZGG can make more as presents for this Christmas, I think they are going to be a complete hit!
So all in all, I couldn't rave about this enough. For once even stingy me has to give the value for money top marks considering I was expecting the price to be higher. I'm looking forward to "helping" Miss NZGG with her next lot!
