Product reviews...
I have three kids, all of whom were excited to give this toy a go and naturally they all wanted to try it at the same time, luckily they didn't get into fisticuffs over it.
This set comes with everything you'd need to make a sweet underwater mermaid scene plus an instruction book which provides step by step instructions for putting your lagoon together. My kids had looked through it and it's very easy to follow, however when they came to assembling it they'd lost the booklet. This doesn't matter though as the options with this are endless and you can add any other small toys you can imagine to this. My kids assembled it the first time, together. Since then it has been destroyed and remade, so you will get a lot of use out of it. The only issue we found was that the seahorse and trident were tricky for getting to stand upright.
Words from my ten year old son. "My favourite thing about it was that you can create it how you want it to look, and you can play with it any way you want. My favourite part was the mermaid and the seahorse. I've got lots of cool ideas for what to do with this set." My seven year old daughter says "I like the mermaid, the seahorse and the clam. I like the seashells that can make shapes in the sand. The sand feels fluffy and nice. I think I will play with it lots and I want the other mermaids". My eight year old followed with her opinion stating "I like that you can remake it over and over again. But I really love the whole thing. I think this would be a good birthday present for my friends and I think it's a fun toy for boys and girls".
$30 is a good price tag for something that will get plenty of use and makes room for lots of imagination.
When the Mermaid Lagoon playset arrived, I put it on the bench I left it there a couple of days to see what my kids would do. My daughter saw it and got really excited asking if it was for her. I told her she will see on the weekend as thats when I was planning on giving it to her for a play and review and its the best time when the little ones are actually asleep.
When time came around for her to get her little fingers onto this playset she couldn't wait, her eyes lit up and she was really excited. She opened up the box nice and easy got everything out and I was then asked to leave the room. I was only allowed back after she had completed what she wanted. From what I could see before I was kicked out of the room, there was instructions and lots of bits and pieces for this playset.
From my 9 year old.
The mermaid playset is really neat, I love playing with it, the sand was really cool, but mum told me to have a mat down so it didn't go everywhere. I read the instructions to see what I could do and if there was a order to do things. I put the sand into the bottom and then placed everything else on top of the sand nicely. I added my own shells that I found at the beach cause the instructions said I could do that. I love the little mermaid that you can take in your pocket I like showing her my room and playing with her outside and then she goes back to sleep at night in her little house that I created I put a little blanket over the top to keep her warm. I love my mermaid playset and I love my mermaid that I have called elle.
After My daughter showed me her playset, I asked her how easy it was, she said it was easy and fun and that if there was different ones she would like more to put next to Elle. I like that children can add their own special treasures to make it their own. I was very surprised the amount of items it actually came with. I would be happy to buy this for a little boy or girl for birthdays or Christmas if its something they are into, bear in mind the age of the child. I think 4 and above as you can be sure it wont go into the mouth and hopefully stay up high from littler fingers
I was so excited to show my daughter (aged 4.5) this mermaid lagoon playset we were lucky enough to review; she immediately wanted to open it and get on with things. Given her younger brother was sleeping; she knew that this was her time as we will often do 'special' things or 'treats' for her while he sleeps. I immediately loved the presentation of this product and couldn't wait to see all the goodies inside the box. We had the Marina mermaid which is the teal set to review. I really loved the colour schemes and it fits in nicely in my girls bedroom where it is now proudly displayed.
Once opened; I wasn't disappointed with this product at all; I could immediately see that this was a top quality product that was designed to last. The plastic was sturdy and well made; not flimsy or thin at all. The sand was plentiful and my girl spent some time experimenting with it throughout the process; its much like kinetic sand or the likes that are available currently. I was surprised when my daughter immediately picked up each bit and told me what it was for (she had decided from looking at the box) and you know, most things she was 100% right about too. Nevertheless I read her the instructions throughout the assembly of this to ensure correct procedure was followed so the outcome was exactly as it should be! She likened this process to baking which we do a bit of, so it was great to see her understanding the process of instructions.
This was such an easy toy to use, set up and will be used time and time again. I loved that it allowed my daughter the freedom of a more 'grown up' thing to do while still giving her freedom to be creative. While she followed the instructions perfectly (which is such an important skill to learn) she also added her own thoughts or ideas as she worked. You can see a little video of her during this process on the KIWIreviews Facebook page if you'd like to see this product being used in action For me; the description of this product was very accurate and the age group targeted just right. I will be keeping an eye out to purchase these again for future birthday presents and Christmas gifts!
My daughter spent a good hour fully engaged with this product before putting in up high on the shelf where she can still see it but her younger brother can't reach it. It is without a doubt a toy that I very highly recommend! It certainly made my little girls week and I know it will brighten many more too.
Miss Six was overcome with delight when I took out the box containing the toy she was going to review. It had been a bad day - she had come home from school in tears because two of her friends were having a playdate and had not asked her to join them, and then she had broken one of her favourite toys. But all that was forgotten when I handed her the box and said she might very well be one of the first little kids in our area to test it out and play with it.
She took charge straight away, insisting on doing everything herself while she gave me a running commentary on what she was doing. I had not seen inside the box because I wanted her to open it herself, so I was just as pleased as she was with the way the contents were laid out. She checked that everything was there and then started to assemble it all. The instructions were clear and, apart from asking me to clarify one or two items, she was able to figure it all out for herself.
The "lagoon" very quickly took shape, with the items being arranged and rearranged to her liking. Seaweed, shells, starfish and magic sand quickly filled every available space with the seahorse placed strategically in the middle. Last of all, she added the seashell and put Coral the Mermaid inside with her trident. I muttered something about Botticelli but the reference was lost on her - she assured me that the Mermaid was called Coral so there!
Miss Six liked the idea of being able to add some of her own items. Whenever she goes to the beach she arrives back with pockets full of shells and seaweed, and plastic bags full of sand which are smuggled into the car when her parents are not looking (because they are likely to spill). She thought she might look for some little decorations that she could add to her lagoon and personalise it. I told her that was a great idea, and I would love to see the result when she had finished.
I watched as the lid was put in place over the lagoon. It is a useful addition to keep all the contents in place - as well as being decorative, of course. I asked Miss Six if you could use the knob to lift the toy, but she said she was still figuring that out and would let me know when she had checked it. There was no way she was going to let me "help". As far as she was concerned, this was her toy and she was going to do any checking without outside interference.
The little doll has its own shell so the child can take it to different places in her pocket. That was another plus for Miss Six as she never leaves the house without an assortment of books and toys, whether the trip is to be a long one or just a couple of kilometres to school or the shopping centre, Her new friend Coral is bound to be accompanying her to lots of places, and I expect the first friends to get to see her will be the two traitors who planned a playdate without Miss Six. You are never too young to plot your revenge!
