When I saw this I thought that it would be something fun to try and give my children some delight at owning a mini puppy toy. The thing that always catches my eye is how delightful and fun the cover looks, and so I looked forward to giving it a go.
The instructions are nice and easy, I love that the pieces to use to make the pompoms are made out of a good plastic so they'll last for a good while yet and can be reused over and over again. After a little bit of confusion I managed to work out where I was at and set to. It was lovely and easy to make the pompoms and then to glue everything together.
However... I found that there wasn't enough yarn to make four pompoms, three at a push, but only so long as you don't screw up anywhere along the way and get everything perfect, which is a shame since it states that there is enough to make four puppies. It took a little bit of work to get the puppy into the cardboard bag that comes with, which is ok, but I would suggest that an adult or a child who won't get frustrated easy be the one to put the puppy into the bag.
I liked the idea and the product but felt let down by the fact that there wasn't enough to complete the amount of puppies I was told that I would be able to.
We have always loved Klutz craft kits and this one is no exception my daughter loves animals so this was a great match for her. Some of her favourite breed dogs are included in the book like the chihuahua and the pug so it was no surprise that she decided to make the chihuahua first.
The book has every thing included so you don't need to have any special materials to get started straight into the project which is why I love these Klutz kits so much. The only extra thing we needed was a pair of scissors for cutting the wool. I did find the little bottle of glue was a bit small and didn't last us very long but luckily we had a bottle that still had some left from a previous klutz kit which we were able to use for these. The other thing my daughter thought would of been better was if there was a fold out metre ruler for measuring out the wool as the ruler printed on the back of the book is only 20cm's and most wool measurements were about 4 metres.
We had a bit of frustration on our first project as the Chihuahua called for 17 metres of the tan coloured wool, except the ball of tan wool provided was only 13 metres in total so we were left short and had to use a length of the white wool to complete the project. I think looking at what we have made so far there is only enough wool to complete three of the puppies in the book before you would need to buy new wool. There is enough accessories like collars and bows to make more but you would need to buy your own wool to make more.
The good thing is that the book can be used over and over again with your own materials so it is not a one hit wonder like some craft kits can be. My daughter has done many projects using pom poms but we have always used cardboard cut outs, where this kit provides a cool plastic inner for the making of the pom poms which I thought was really neat and made making pom poms a whole lot quicker and easier.
I am thinking of buying another copy of this book to give to my niece for Christmas as I think it is very cool. My niece is only 7 but I think younger children would be fine with this kit as it is quite easy to use. So if you love puppies and pom poms and want a cool project for your child this kit is fantastic but just raid nana's wool stash for some spare wool to keep you going ;)
