My son was so excited when he seen this book Lego Nexo Knights Graduation Day in the goodies to be reviewed. He loves lego and all things related and he could not wait to sit down and read the book. He said he was a little disappointed that there were no pictured throughout the whole book, but he did comment that he loved the main cover photo. He said he would have liked to see some more lego knights pictures in the book, which I also think would have been cool.
For the price of the book being $10 I think that this is a great price for the book and very affordable and would also make a neat present for kids in his class birthdays he goes to. It would be one of those books to buy where you could not go wrong as most kids love lego so it would be a well-loved book. I also liked how it made my son super excited to receive it and the joy it brought him, so it would be cool to pass that feeling on to other kids.
The story its self is great and my son really enjoyed the story line and found it ok to read with some help with certain words that could not pronounce. My son and his cousin when he came over sat down reading it together and were soaking up the story line talking to each other about the book, and also making up new ideas themselves of what they think could happen next or what else could happen instead of. I liked how the chapters were not too long so on some nights where I read to my son I could read one or chapters at a time and it was broken down nicely into shorter chapters and not super long ones. I would recommend this book to parent to buy for their kids or for other kids.
When I showed my daughter this book, she was so excited. She was bursting about the new Nexo Knights Lego sets she had seen and how this was just like the sets. She did not know about the app game at all, so I was excited that I knew something she didn't!
We sat down to read this together. As she is not a huge reader at home I did the lion's share of the reading. We decided to read 2 or 3 chapters a night, and this took us about a week to read. This is a starter book to introduce you to the characters of Nexo Knight. You get to know a little bit about each person. It is also an origin story for the main baddie.
Great stuff about this story was that there are three main female characters and they are all strong characters in their own right. The queen has a lot of moxy and doesn't just sit back in an attack. The princess Macy wants to be a knight. There is a lot about her that reminded me of the movie Brave. She fears being left out of the action and she wants to be taken seriously. She is also much more focused on the tasks at hand. Then there is Ava, who is a knight in training. However she has amazing technology skills that team would be lost without.
I found the infighting between some of the characters to be quite tiring. I appreciate that sometimes that stuff does take a while to work through, but it was frustrating for me to see them not learning about team work as quickly as I felt they should have. My daughter was completely fine with it though. The male characters read a bit like a boy band on a reality TV show. They didn't round out in a way that made me connect with them. However, as this was an introductory tale I think that was a lot to expect.
I downloaded the app game the other day and started to have a play. It's been fun working out how to get my character to move and fight. Best of all you can scan the shield in the back of this book into the game and use it as a Nexo power boost for your weapons. It's like Merlock 2.0 is real. So that was really neat too. Of course my 9 year old picked up the game easily and is enjoying the extra dimension to this book.
