Considering that my last taste of one of these drinks did not go well I was rather hesitant to try this and after pouring a small amount into a cup gave it a tentative sip. Tom my surprise it wasn't too bad and I was happy enough to keep sipping away at it. I gave my husband some to try, without letting him know what it was and he quickly went "ick! Some warning next time please!" much to my delight but suffice to say he didn't finish his drink. I gave some to my mum who gave it a sip and compared it to energy drinks "taste like nothing but nothing to hard to drink".
This, for me, was a nice enough drink, if this was on the shelf and there was a limited selection with nothing else that I like available then I would get this one, more for something to drink than because I really really like it, but that in itself isn't a bad thing. I really like the bottle and the designs on it, seems very fitting for the overall aim of the drink and so to me it suits it well. This isn't a cheap drink and I don't really love it, but if it was the only thing on offer I could drink it easily enough.
A carbonated tea drink is interesting and unique. I have tried other brands before and they have been horrible. But this beverage is surprisingly good. Being a combination of only water, black tea, and raw sugar (3.1 grams per 100 mls), it is the healthiest tea drink I have seen. Due to the fermentation process, it contains alcohol, though apparently never more than 1%.
The alcohol is certainly a noticeable part of the flavour. This "origins" flavour has an apple cider taste to it, which is nice. I am surprised by how tasty it is. For a male who enjoys alcoholic beverages, this is a great healthy alternative to alcohol, which is even more important these days with the new laws that have lowered the allowed alcohol limit for driving.
If I can find a place that stocks this in 4 or 6 packs for a reasonable price, this will definitely be a part of my regular drinks. Unfortunately, this drink is not stocked at too many outlets according to their website. It is definitely a drink that I would recommend, but as a single serving for approximately $4.50, it is on the expensive side, which means it can only be a luxury item for now.
I probably should have started my reviewing of this Kombucha tea range with this - the one called Origins. But I didn't, I started with the feijoa. I thought the feijoa one was good. My husband hated it. For that reason I didn't even bother him with this on. But I had half of this one just chilled from the fridge.
It came out of the bottle fizzy effervescent. The flavour was slightly salty, with a sweetness in the end notes. It almost tasted lemony. I could definitely taste that black tea in the mix too. Black tea has a bittersweet tannin flavour to me. The colour of the liquid is cloudy but golden. I thought it was a good look in a clear glass and it would be great with a slice of lemon and a few ice cubes or something to dress it up.
I'm not sure it's the done thing, but I decided to add a little honey liqueur to this tea on it's second tasting. I thought this would make the drink sweeter, but it wasn't much sweeter. The fizz increased and the salty taste increased as well. I'm assuming that was a reaction to the extra alcohol. I personally am glad that I didn't waste too much of the tea drink on having it with alcohol as it was much nicer on it's own. I imagine it would be fab in a summer punch though where it might replace the cold tea.
