Back in the day a few thirst Englishmen got into the habit of raiding orchards for fruit to brew their cider. The sneaky buggers called their missions "Scrumping" and the resulting drop "Scrumpy".
Today we don't nick the fruit, but the spirit and passion of scrumping still lives on.
Product reviews...
I tried Harvest Scrumpy Raspberry Cider recently when I was on holiday. I hadn't had cider for years. The colour, a clear raspberry pink, caught my eye immediately, I picked it up to read the label, and hesitated to buy it, I love raspberries but often find that raspberry flavoured beverages are too sweet and cloying, with an artificial taste. I decided to try it as I was sure that if I didn't like it, my daughter would. I was surprised at how reasonable the price is at $9.99 for 1.25 litres, I had thought it would be more, so was delighted that it fitted so well into my budget.
Being only an occasional drinker I started with half a glass. The rest my daughter drank. I found that the flavour to my surprise that it is delightfully light and fruity, with a genuine raspberry taste, not too sweet or cloying with just the right amount of fizz on my tongue. So delicious that half a glass was not enough! The next day I bought another bottle, and drank half of it. In future, now I am back home, I will often treat myself to a bottle and not offer it to anyone.
I wanted to review this Cider because my husband and I have recently been introduced to cider and I'm amazed at how many brands and flavours there actually are. I'm making it a personal mission to try as many as I can and with summer just around the corner now is the perfect time to do all this leg work so I can sit back in the sun and enjoy the good brands and flavours.
I really liked the bright bottle and the fact that you could see the liquid inside very easily so you knew exactly how much was left without having to look too closely. The bottle is very much like a soda bottle and it seemed very cheap to me although it is very nice to hold and easy to pour. Personally, I prefer my alcoholic beverages to be in glass bottles rather than plastic because it just feels a bit more classy and grown up, I feel like a teenager when I have a plastic bottle.
The flavour did taste like raspberry but it wasn't too sweet. It actually really reminded me of a certain bubbly wine that is usually drunk around Christmas time so I decided to do what I usually do with that certain wine and I popped a strawberry into the glass and by the time the glass was finished the strawberry had soaked up the flavour and was delicious!
For the price of this bottle I would definitely buy this again, I might even replace one of the Christmas wine bottles and see if anyone notices.
I have often spied Scrumpy cider in the supermarket but have never tried it but when I saw the raspberry cider up for review I knew I had to try it. I'm now kicking myself that I haven't brought it in the past and it's going to be something I will be buying again very soon!
As soon as I opened the bottle the yummy raspberry smell hit me, it reminded me a lot of raspberry Fanta. I love cider but find some have a bit of a bitter after taste but not the Scrumpy raspberry cider. It has a light refreshing fruity flavour. I had mine served ice cold after a long hot day at work and it hit the spot perfectly. The one downside of it is that it's so refreshing and easy to drink the glass disappears before you realise it!
The size of the bottle makes it perfect to share with friends and would make it easy to take along to a summer bbq. I think it would also be yummy added to a summer fruit trifle to make a modern twist on an old classic and I certain have plans to try one myself when the berries come into season.
The red Scrumpy Raspberry Cider from Harvest is POW stand out when you first look at it. People think of Apple "flavoured" cider tends to be green colour which is what we are all used to. Along comes this beaming red bottle of fun that just begs for attention.
It is a really nice well fizzed drink, that for my tastes was better enjoyed ice cold. The warmer these get the more I am able to taste the back flavours of some stronger apple ciders. Weighing in at 1.25lt there is plenty for sharing with a friend or scoffing by yourself.
I found the flavour not specifically raspberry but still a very nice flavour of berry not sweet or tart just right. Because of the bright colour you would think it might stain your tongue but I did not notice that. I was able to relax and enjoy the subtle flavour till the end. I also considered this would be a great cooking ingredient being it is red and has many more uses aside from the normal green ciders.
All in all I would recommend this product to anyone that is a fan of normal apple cider. Cider isn't for everyone and this is like a proper, no-fancy-flavour combination cider, but a strong full bodied one.
Oh my gosh! Who knew so much deliciousness could come out of one bottle?
This is a new favourite and will be my go to choice this Summer especially at Barbecues and trips to the beach!
The Scrumpy Raspberry Cider is light, fruity and refreshing! I loved that it was not to sweet and didn't have the strong bitterness that some Cider's tend to have. It is the perfect size and I also like that it comes in a plastic bottle, I'm not a huge fan of glass and drinking!
This would also be the perfect addition to jellies, fruit punch & a delicious alternative to my usual summer drop! It has a slight bubble to it but not as mu h as you'd expect from say a wine, which I much prefer, to much fizz leaves me bloated. Scrumpy Raspberry Cider is delicious accompanied with food as it isn't to heavy.
If you like Cider or love fruit this is a must try for you! This will be on the shopping list for me over Summer and I will be recommending it to anybody who will listen! Perfect size, Delicious flavour, Recyclable bottl, to me this spells the perfect Summer Treat!
I've seen this in the shop a few times but we hadn't bought it as our enjoyment of strawberry and raspberry flavored drinks has been tainted by a drink we got a good few years ago was sickly sweet, so we've stayed away from them, until we saw KIWIreviews offering this Raspberry Scrumpy.
I thought the bottle color was interesting, you don't usually see bottles that color which isn't simply caused by the drink color. The drink itself is a pale pink, which I thought was good and lets you know that it's going to be a berry taste. The bottle is loud and clear as to the type of cider and there can be no doubt that it is going to be a fruity drink.
Now, the flavor itself... It had a slight aftertaste to the drink, but not a bad after taste and not enough to discourage me from drinking it at all. I found the sweetness to be just right, not too strong at all. The raspberry taste was good and you could tell that, yup, this is a raspberry drink, it has a decent fizz to it but not overpowering and you didn't need to wait for it to de-fizz.
I would buy this again, was a yummy drink.
The more I try the various flavours in cider the more I realise that some combinations might sound good but aren't always worth the effort. First thing I notice is the pretty pink colour and then holding it a bit closer to my face I could hear the bubbles fizzing. I took a small sip in case it was not my taste but I found that I did rather enjoy it.
The bottle is big enough to serve over a few nights and lucky the bottle top is one that can be put back onto the bottle if needed. The label has all the usual information on it, good to see that safe drinking is being promoted and that they are reminding pregnant women that alcohol is not good for unborn babies. I was a bit surprised to see that the alcohol volume is a bit higher than most ciders but still has a subtle taste to it. A nice touch is the bit of history on the label explaining about how Scrumpy got it name.
To be totally honest I do still prefer apple cider but I am finding that there are a few other good flavours if I want a bit of a surprise. There are still some of the flavours that I would be willing to try and this brand is looking like one I will buy again.
