After hearing that opposites attract, we married the tangy, pucker your lips attitude of blackcurrant to the sweetly refreshing charms of apple.
At 4.5% alcohol, Ranga Blackcurrant & Apple Cider has an off dry finish and a tangy sweetness that comes from the use of real blackcurrant.
Product reviews...
I was lucky enough to be given some of this cider to review and having got into my ciders a bit lately, I was keen to get into it. I chilled the bottle and shared it with a friend. A bottle is just over 1 standard drink, so I could have easily drunk it all myself and more... but maybe next time!
I really liked the taste of this cider - it definitely had a mild version of the blackcurrant flavour that I'm familiar with from Ribena, but with an apple base. It was very very drinkable - I honestly didn't notice the alcohol that much and could happily down many of these in a row on a nice summer evening such as tonight. It was refreshing and not too sweet or too tart.
My friend is not much of an alcohol drinker - in fact I was surprised she wanted some as I have never seen her drink alcohol before. But she also really enjoyed it and agreed that you wouldn't really notice it was alcohol.
I would definitely buy this cider again - I love ciders with something a little more than plain apple and this really fitted the bill, making it a nice alternative to wine or beer.
I have fond memories of blackcurrants and blackcurrant drinks from when I was little. I am always keen to try anything that has blackcurrant in the name. Cider is also something that I really enjoy. Blackcurrant cider had to be enjoyed by my tastebuds! I was excited to be able to try and then review Ranga Blackcurrant and Apple Cider.
I put the bottle in the fridge to chill nicely as that it definitely the best way to have cider. It is Friday today and this evening I felt like trying the nice cold cider which was sitting in the fridge looking at me each time I opened the door! A quick test of the lid to see if it was a twist top or standard cap showed me that I did need a bottle opened to get into the bottle. A bottle worked nicely to share with my husband so we could each have a little glass each with dinner.
Once I had poured it into a glass, I realised that it had particular appeal to my 3 year old daughter. Something to be aware of - it tastes similar to blackcurrant drinks and looks like one too. Caution needs to be taken that children don't think that it is a soft drink and go ahead and consume it if left sitting on the table. I also think that it isn't overly alcoholic tasting (it is only 4.5%) and I am pretty sure that if given the opportunity, Miss 3 would drink it happily. Also found that the packaging made me think more of a soft drink than an alcoholic beverage. The word "cider" and "4.5%" are in small lettering and not totally in-your-face.
I found that it tasted just like Ribena but had a definite base flavour of apple cider. My husband found it too sweet but I found that it was a flavour that I enjoyed. As far as ciders go I am generally more drawn to a straight apple cider. I would now consider this flavour my second choice. I haven't previously had the Ranga branded ciders and I found that it very enjoyable and it is an option that I would look at when shopping for cider in the future.
This year I was introduced to cider and I am so glad that I was. I've found that I really enjoy the sweet taste of the berry type ciders which is why I requested this particular product to try and review. While the label didn't really catch my attention and scream at me to try it I did really like the look of the liquid in the glass bottle.
When it arrived I put it straight in the fridge to cool while I went out to play netball. When I got home it was nice and cold and ready for drinking (well in my opinion anyway!). The glass bottle has a cap on it like most beers which was easily removed with a bottle opener. I thought the bottle size was perfect for one person, it wasn't so big that I felt I had to pour it in a glass but it wasn't too small either leaving you wanting more.
Now I quite like blackcurrant juice and apple juice on their own but when the two are put together to form this cider it just didn't work for me. To be honest I could only drink half the bottle before I gave the rest to my husband to finish it (He actually quite liked it). I found the taste not as sweet as I was hoping for, I think the blackcurrants made it a bit to tart for my tastes. But the fact that my husband enjoyed his share does show you that people have different tastes and this particular taste was more suited to him than me.
I think the price for this drink is pretty good compared to the others on the market and the fact it comes in a 6 pack is pretty handy. I can see my husband sneaking this into the shopping trolley to buy with our weekly shop and at this price I wouldn't mind as long as I grabbed a flavour that I could enjoy too.
I like most apple drinks be it apple on its own or paired with black currant so it would be a sure bet I would want to try this and although I'm not disappointed I was not overly impressed with this drink. The taste is good, not too sweet and not too tart (I prefer sweet to tart) but there are other flavour combinations that I do like better.
As usual I had to go and see what information the label would have and was surprised to see that they even remind you to recycle which shows that they care about the environment. The usual information about alcohol volume is on the label as well as the information about standard drinks so there is no excuse for not knowing how much you have actually had to drink. What did surprise me was that they have included a QR code to scan which will link to a website but only if you have a smartphone and the correct app installed.
The bottle size is a bit smaller than some of the other brands I have tried which could be a good thing as if you are sharing then you have smaller drinks but it could also be a bit deceiving as you don't feel like you are drinking that much.
I might be buying this again but probably only if none of my preferred brands are available.
I like a good fruit juice so I thought that this would be a good drink to try out and see if I would like to buy it again or not. This has a good serving size as I was able to split on bottle between a friend, my wife and me whilst feeling like a I had a nice sized drink but not quite enough to feel fully satisfied. The bottle label is a rather nice design and can be quite eye catching, I know each time I opened up the fridge it was pretty much staring me in the face.
I gave this a small sip to begin with and found that it has a nice strong apple taste with just a hint of tart blackcurrants so I was happy to give this a few bigger sips. Sadly though I found that it has a bit of an aftertaste that I don't like and it hangs around in the mouth a bit so I didn't enjoy this as much as I feel that I could have given my excitement for it. Usually I drink a cider a little too fast (or so my wife says) but with this I had no trouble finishing it as I just wanted to get it out of the way in favor if drinking something else but not wasting the drink. I doubt I would buy this.
I love Blackcurrant and Apple juice so when I saw this product up for review, I knew I had to try it. I wasn't disappointed - deliciously sweet apples paired with tart black currants, just the right amount of fizz and I was in heaven - the perfect drink for sipping on a hot summers night.
It's the first time that I've tried any of the ciders in the Ranga range and I was very happy with this product. It had the perfect balance of flavours for me - the right mix of sweet and sour that kept me coming back for more and left me feeling refreshed. But be careful, it's incredibly easy to drink because it really is just like drinking slightly fizzy Blackcurrant and Apple juice. My partner isn't a big fan of the Blackcurrant and Apple flavour combination but he also enjoyed this product. I also like that's it's available in a 6 pack, making it quite good value for money.
The packaging is simple while still being eye catching and somewhat festive - screaming summer and parties. Definitely a delicious beverage to be enjoyed whatever the occasion and one that I'll be sure to purchase and share with friends.
