This is an expansion for The Settlers of Catan. You will need the original "Settlers of Catan" game to play this.
Players can build shipping lanes, which are very similar to roads. Additionally, the game comes with many different water-hex-heavy variant setups.
Part of the Catan Series.

Seafarers of Catan is an expansion to the award winning game Settlers of Catan, so please note that you need Settlers of Catan in order to play this game - the 2 box sets combine. As per of Catan you can only play with 3 or 4 players unless you buy an expansion for both box sets. I've only played seafarers with up to 4 people (all adults) so can only comment on that.
If you like Settlers of Catan you will know that it is playable over and over with the many different game board set ups possible, so it might be a while before you start looking at expansions but like the base game this adds lots of new game plays and so many board set ups that it's hard to get bored. The rules come with some different scenarios but our family tends to stick to the scenario that starts with a good amount of the tiles turned upside down, and they get revealed during the game. It takes a while to set it up but it's a lot of fun if you like the randomness of it. We find that it makes for a fun game even if you aren't winning as there are so many elements to it. You might be just building lots of ships and exploring or you might even be first to reach the coveted gold. We've been known to beg the winner not to make their winning move until we just get to build on gold!
I believe this game is easy to learn once you know Settlers of Catan as there aren't too many new rules to add. It's a great expansion for a family friendly fun game able to be played over and over and over again, and I highly recommend it.
