I recently had the need for an uncommon service - I needed to play "Musical Tyres". In easy terms, I had some tyres to be taken off some 5-stud rims and put onto my car's 4-stud rims, plus I needed the tyres rotated around the car as well. I was on a tight deadline to get it done in time to get the WoF before a rather long drive... and I sure didn't want to risk getting snapped driving an unwarranted car!
Having tried three other tyre stores to see if they would do it for me at an affordable price, and finding the best deal was from a grumpy bunch who demanded $60 for the labour, plus the rights to slap their branded stickers all over my car without my permission... I was getting a little worried, since I only had $40 in cash on me and my EFTPOS card was back at home.
As a last ditch attempt, I pulled into Carter's at their old venue (They have recently relocated to new premises) and asked if they could help me out. I explained my situation, and the manager, who was in a bit of a hurry, quickly agreed to help me for the price I could afford, delegated the job to another staff member then took off to a meeting. Off to a good start...
After finishing the job they were currently on - a large tractor tyre being re-hubbed - they were on to deal with my tyres. It was impressive, how quickly they whipped through the job, and even balanced all four wheels for me at no extra charge. I was very pleased to hand over the cash and head off to get the WoF ticked off, which it was without a hitch.
I know that I will soon need two more tyres, and I know where I plan to go for great service from a bunch of genuine blokes who know their stuff, and are willing to explain what they do to a curious geek like me.
Overall, excellent place to consider if you need tyres but can't afford to pay the prices the "big players" demand for the same thing. If this is an indication of the chain as a whole, I know that almost anywhere I am in the North Island, I'm not far away from a place I'd be happy to shop for tyres at!
