Once Upon A Time is a game in which the players create a story together, using cards that show typical elements from fairy tales. One player is the Storyteller and creates a story using the ingredients on her cards. She tries to guide the plot towards her own ending. The other players try to use cards to interrupt her and become the new Storyteller. The winner is the first player to play out all her cards and end with her Happy Ever After card.
Players: 2-6

Once Upon a Time is a great little game if you have an active imagination. The aim of the game seems simple enough, get rid of all the cards in your hand. However, one of your cards if the final line of your story, and your story must make enough sense for the ending that you give it, you can't be talking about a lost princess meeting a witch and suddenly end it with "and then the king saw the error of his ways" if there was no lead up to it or no mention of a king in the story. In the beginning, my kids struggled the most with simply rambling on and continuing the story but they're getting the hang of it and we go on some wild rides.
Each card you have will have a specific word on it, well, princess, castle, cottage, scared, hungry, transformed, flew etc. and in order to play the card you must say the word, again, making a story make sense. If at any point you say a word on someone elses card, they can take over the story and you pickup a card. There are also cards that say 'interrupt', and if a card is played in that category, the story can be stolen from you. There are a few expansions available, which simply add more cards to the game, to expand the possibilities, so if it's a game you love, there's more to add to the storybook. I really like hearing the different directions we go in and then the attempt to pull it back so it meets the ending sentence.
