Inspired by Vogel's most-loved toast, and perfectly blended with Pic's freshly roasted peanut butter, we bring you The Perfect Match. Pic's Big Mix, made with toasted sesame, chia, hemp, pumpkin and sunflower seeds (the seeds Vogel's still swear by to bake their bread fresh each day).
Product reviews...
We are huge nut butter fans in our house, so when the chance to try the Big Mix just from Vogels, I jumped at the chance. Most of our house likes smooth peanut butter, but I adore crunchy, so figured if none of them liked it, all the more for me to enjoy! I personally like having a more premium peanut butter than just the usual in the pantry, for a treat and also as a good source of protein, being that I work from home and have limited time for a lunch break so need something quick, filling and yum! I hope that the Big Mix would be just that!.
The jar itself is quite distinct, with a black lid and star, making it easy to find in both online shopping and in-store. I was even able to get my friend's young daughter to go and get me a jar when at the supermarket (we needed more as devoured the jar we were sent!!). The nut butter mix is full of great nuts and seeds that have health and gut benefits, as well as filling you up in a good way. It is gluten-free and because of the combination of pumpkin, chia, sesame, sunflower, and hemp seeds, It's crunchy in texture and look, though not too much, possibly due to the way it is combined, making it just right. You get a crisp kind of texture, a combo of crunchy and smooth peanut butter but with way more variety in there. When I first opened the jar, the nuts and seeds were very visible, along with all the good oils from them, and here I have to admit that as a first taste, I ate it straight from the jar, and it was DELICIOUS!
This jar of goodness is just a smidge under 300g and is around $7 RRP, making it good value, but not an everyday type of not butter. I have already bought more of it, to have it as a treat, however, so far 4 of the 5 of us have admitted to eating it straight from the jar, so I may have to hide it if I want any of it, or if I want it to last, Massive hit in our house and I look forward to trying others!
This was initially a slightly smaller volume jar than I was expecting (less than the usual jam/spread size). This therefore felt like it had to be quite impressive to make up for that. I initially thought the range of seeds was great but in reality they didn't add what I would have hoped to the taste. It possibly depends what you like to use your peanut butter for, I could see this being great in mueslis and baking to add a real sense of healthy.
I tried it on toast and it was just a bit too seedy for that (see picture). I found you also had to use quite a bit to get the peanut butter taste coming through. The next time I refrained from using a seedy bread and that worked better - so maybe that would be best in future). I found that the seed-to-butter ratio was probably tipped a little bit too much towards the seeds for me overall and I ended up with less butter and more seeds than I would have liked but I acknowledge I don't consume a lot of seedy spreads. This was why I tried it in some ANZAC biscuits I made (I have used other peanut butters here before) and it went better but it did make them feel "too healthy" for me. Husband found it worked on top of his muesli as a treat but I prefer yoghurt and fruit.
This would be a great product if you love seeds a bit more than I do. I think I like a more traditional peanut butter on my grainy toast. Give it a try if you want something quite different.
We are a household full of keen peanut butter eaters, the house is divided with some enjoying smooth and the others enjoying the crunchy variety, I myself like a crunchy peanut butter. My partner has recently decided that he wants to eat a bread that will fill him up for longer and has started using Vogel's bread for his breakfast and lunch, when I saw this collaboration between Vogel's and Pic's I knew it had to be good, so grabbed a jar for us to sample.
The jar is noticeable with the black lid with the token star on top, the label with its contrasting black and red, and the unmistakable words "Big Mix". This product is gluten free and is packed full of healthy seeds such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, sesame seeds and chia seeds, so obviously the texture will be quite crunchy I thought. Upon opening the jar and taking a peep in there was the token layer of oil that needed mixed in, a good sign of a quality peanut butter, I put a teaspoon in and grabbed enough for a mouthful. The texture was as expected crunchy, but nothing too major as the majority of the seeds were tiny enough not to worry about, apart from the pumpkin seeds, and the peanut butter itself was a good consistency, I got out a piece of toast to see how well it would spread, no issues there either. The children were not very keen on this type of peanut butter, two of the children said that they didn't like the feeling of having the seeds stuck between their teeth, but that just means more for my partner and me.
This jar of deliciousness is 290g and $7 so will definitely be a special treat every now and again to buy a jar, but I firmly believe that you are paying for the supreme quality supplied by the Pic's company. I look forward to seeing who else the company collaborates with next in expanding the world of peanut butter.
I visited the Pic's Peanut Butter factory in Nelson last year and was really impressed with their story and how they roast their nuts in the factory as opposed to importing them. This gives the peanut butter a much fresher and richer flavour. Pic's Crunchy Nut peanut butter is a staple in our pantry so I was interested to see how the Vogel's inspired Big Mix would fare.
Upon opening, I could see plenty of seeds; pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, and chia seeds. It was thick to stir and when I had a small spoonful, the seeds gave the peanut butter a lovely crunch. A few years ago, I got on board the peanut butter and jam trend and it's my go-to snack when I'm hungry and lazy. I decided to try the Big Mix with jam on toast and boy, was I not disappointed. The combo was perfection with the seeds complimenting the peanut butter and the strawberry jam giving it a lovely sweetness. It was so delicious I've had this for lunch three days on the trot. My hubby is also a big peanut butter connoisseur and had some of it on toast. Although he did complain about some of the seeds getting stuck between his teeth (this is something you would definitely want to check after eating) he really enjoyed the texture and taste.
This is a tasty and filling spread that is a little bit different from your bog-standard peanut butter. I do recommend you try some now!
Peanut butter is one of the most used spreads in the world and it is clear to see why as it is so tasty and only requires peanuts to produce it. The Pic's Big Mix was on my must-try list as soon as I saw it because it is basically a trail mix in spread form. One thing with these types of mixes is they can really be hit or miss as it either blends very well or it is too over-complicated in taste and texture but I'm happy to say Pic's have no doubt got this mix right.
I tried this spread the same as I do every other peanut butter for its first try and that was straight onto a spoon. I really enjoyed this peanut butter as it is bursting with crunchiness and a good salty peanutty flavor which I found lacking in the smunchy peanut butter. The mix is full of Pumpkin, sunflower, hemp, sesame, and chia seeds and they all pair together so well. I tried it next on Vogel's thin toast and just as I expected it tasted so good with the crunchiness of the toast and peanut butter mix peaking with max flavor and texture.
I really enjoyed this mix and will definitely be adding it to our pantry as a frequent resident. This is to me the best spread out of the Pic's range and I will be experimenting with what else I can use this for with baking. If you like peanut butter and want something quick and easy to fill you up I recommend giving this mix a try.
We took one look at this new product and had exactly the same idea - ice-cream! Recently we bought some chocolate-and-peanut butter ice-cream and it was totally delicious; this was not a combination I would ever have thought of making, but with two family members who have temporary tooth issues, small seeds rather than large nuts were an excellent choice. Six of us got together to make a dessert with a difference, and the youngest child was tasked with assembling it for a photo.
We started with vanilla ice-cream, then added a slice of chocolate brownie. Next came another layer of ice-cream, this time with a generous helping of the peanut butter mixed in with it. A topping of fresh cream, a drizzle of chocolate syrup, and we were ready for the most decadent and yummy dessert ever. Miss Five, who was decorating, went a little overboard with the fresh cream and chocolate syrup so it overflowed and ran down the sides of the glasses, but she assured us that meant we would all have plenty of everything and anyway it was very pretty!
It may have looked strange but it was a dessert fit for a banquet. The flavour of the nuts came through and meant that the final effect was not too sweet. Mr 13, who has braces, said he had no problem at all with bits sticking in the wires as they were small; my partner, who had a couple of teeth extracted recently, also reported that the dessert was easy to eat, causing no problems with the still tender sockets.
I tried some next as a filling in a sponge cake, combined with raspberry jam and cream. I spread the jam on first, then the nut butter, and last added a layer of whipped cream before replacing the upper tier of the cake. Because there were already little seeds in the jam, I did not tell people about the nut addition; I just offered the cake round and waited for the reactions. Nobody picked that there were nuts in it as the flavour was masked by the jam, but several said it was a really nice cake and asked what sort of jam I had used as they were not familiar with it. My cousin asked where I had found the jam as I had cooked at her house with her ingredients and she did not recognise it! She wanted to know so she could buy it herself; although she knew I had arrived with the Big Mix jar she had not made the connection.
Because the overall flavour of the spread is so delicate, I would not use it with toast or sandwiches. Regular peanut butter would be much better. However, it went very well on crackers with a smear of honey, and was perfect mixed with some passionfruit pulp and whipped cream to use as a topping for fruit salad. I think all in all this is a product better suited to dessert food if you want to benefit from the delicate nutty flavour. And we now know it is perfect for kids with braces!
We are looking at travelling to the south island for a holiday. One of the best tools I have found is YouTube and I have found so many amazing places I want to visit because of this device. I have found that pretty much everyone that I am following when they visit Nelson they all recommend Pic's factory tour. Riding the bike and making your own peanut butter does look like fun. I told my husband about it and he said was not interested until he was on the couch while I was doing 'research' and he saw what the tour had to offer and he automatically changed his mind and said he was 'all in'. The reason I explain this is because there is a cafe that has a granola bowl and when I saw this up for review that was my first thought. A smoothie bowl with peanut butter and chocolate.
Unfortunately, in this house peanut butter is lucky to last half a week and when its Pic's peanut butter that reduces down to a night. I have three people in this house who would die for peanut butter. I received the box and put it in the pantry with my plans for easter but when I went to get the jars there was basically a blob left for me to try. Let me clarify - 3 people love it and I absolutely hate the stuff. I hate the smell and the feel of it stuck to the roof my mouth. Growing up even, my dad and brothers would go crazy for it.
I have reviewed a lot of peanut butter over my life and I have to say, honest to god that Pic's is miles a head of any other brand out there and the chocolate version even I am a fan of it. The thing about Pic's is it's only peanuts and salt so it's not like its counterparts. Even when it comes to the sniff test this smells ok and not as sickening as, well, peanut butter. I do like that this has other ingredients other than peanuts in it so this one I was keen to try.
My husband says this is like eating peanut butter on wholemeal bread. The texture has more lumps in it and it is not as smooth. He really likes it but says it would not replace normal peanut butter for him. It is good for a change and likes the pop the pumpkin seeds give. My girls both enjoyed and said they felt it was quite crunchy and felt rather healthy eating it. My youngest said it's weird but it's so good after finishing off the whole jar. I still feel like it's peanut butter - it is nice and I think would be perfect in a smoothie.
At first, I wasn't entirely sure how I was going to try this out. I'm not a big eater of bread so the standard "on toast" wasn't likely. Many dishes I might prepare with peanut butter wouldn't work well with the seed included, so I found myself in the position of being really curious and keen to try it, but not knowing exactly how.
One night, while rewatching some old episode of Stargate, one episode in particular took me right back to the first time I had seen it, and the snack I had been eating at the time - a peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich. I didn't have bread in the house, but I had some wraps and a couple of bananas that needed to be eaten up. So, off to remake some memories, went I.
Spreading a thin layer of butter over the whole wrap, I then laid down a fairly even coating of the Big Mix Peanut Butter covering the bottom 3/4 of the wrap. Over that was laid down thin slices of banana followed by the freshly oil-free air-fried bacon, sliced into short strips. The last few slices of banana went on top, then it was rolled up with the last buttered section gluing the final flap in place.
As with all things bacon, consuming them while still hot is the best option, so I tucked in. Not really taken back into the memory, this was an excellent evolution of it. This was a quick and easy snack to make with a lot of flavour. The seeds worked well with the peanut butter, and complimented the wrap nicely. The sweetness of the banana was a nice balance to the enhanced nuttiness of the Big Mix.
While most of the dishes I make that use peanut butter would not work well with the extra seeds included, the peanut butter choc-chip cookies I make could possibly carry it iff, though I think they would suffer for it in some way - the texture would be quite different from the chewy-fudge center I aim for.
Overall, while it may lose a little in the multi-purpose rating, this is a solidly delightful option to consider if you are more of an 'on toast' person. It would instantly add extra nutrition, fibre and texture to any bread you chose to use, even cheap soft white bread would benefit from the healthy extras packed into this jar. As expected, the base peanut butter was spot-on, and the blend of seeds - right out of the Vogel's recipe book - is an inspirational innovation.
