Pa Hill Chocolate Peanut Butter product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsAn all time classic of Peanut Butter and chocolate mixed by us by hand.

The peanuts we use come from Argentina and are dry roasted to make the perfect texture of peanut butter. Peanut butter madness sets in and we create flavours as peanut butter is a benefit to health and has its uses to flavour and texture in cooking. People love to mix Peanut Butter with a huge variety of flavours.

This product did not stand a chance once the girls found out about it. As soon as they saw it their eyes expanded and both were begging me to try it. From the kitchen I heard numerous delightful squeals and yummmm, oh this is awesome, this is the best, oh can I have some more. My biggest fear would be that it would be gone before I knew it and I would miss out - not actually a bad thing as I absolutely hate peanut butter unless it is mixed in with something else - like say chocolate.

Now I am surrounded by peanut butter lovers. A jar does not go very far in this house, especially when the two monsters get at it and then there is the big kid also. Where as the smell of it turns me off. So when we received this I was surprised when I had a sniff that it still smelt like peanut butter - I was hoping it was going to smell like chocolate. There is a small faint smell of chocolate but that peanut smell definitely comes thru strongly.

By the time I got the courage to try some at least 3/4 of the jar has gone. So opening the lid it looks like someone has been baking chocolate cookies. The appearance reminds me of a cocoa dough, which is fitting considering the ingredients are Peanuts, Cocoa and Sugar. It looked dry in one area and then another part had some oil still hanging around. Tasting it I was hoping it would be more chocolate as that is what I have been told on numerous occasions but all I tasted was thick peanut butter with a tinge of chocolate in the background. Where as I did not hate it, I definitely did not love it.

I have already been asked numerous times can we buy some more as they are both in love with the taste of it. Where as the price is a little more than I like to pay for this particular item I understand that has another component to it Also the jar is 452g where as I usually buy 375g jars. Who am I to say no to something that says 'love is peanut butter and chocolate' on the label - it definitely has won my two girls over.

This was an interesting looking product. I love chocolate and I love peanut butter, so to have a spread that is both combined certainly piqued my interest. First thought when I looked at the product was that I would maybe expect it to taste somewhat like Nutella, seeing as that was some kind of chocolate and nut spread as well. But upon closer inspection of the colour, there was definitely more of that peanut brown colour in this product, so it would be safe to assume that the product would be more peanutty.

Looking at the jar in my hand, if I rolled the jar, I could see the spread inside, moving around with gravity alone, to this definitely looked like it would be a much thinner spread. Opening the jar, a lot of the movement that I was seeing was the oils from the peanuts. The spread beneath the oil looked reasonably thick, but when I properly mixed the oil back into the spread, I noted that the spread was still quite thick.

interestingly I actually quite prefer a thin spread. It is thick enough to sit on the knife, but the particles are small enough that I can spread it with ease. There is minimal risk of tearing the bread or having to use too much of the spread because it isn't spreading properly. So the viscosity of the spread actually means this product can get a lot of uses out of it.

The flavour was perhaps the biggest surprise. Almost no chocolate flavour at all. Despite it being much closer to a chocolate colouring, the chocolate only appeared to be there to complement and heighten the flavour of the peanut butter, not to become the primary flavour. So the peanut flavour was the primary flavour (I should note that it's also smooth peanut butter, not crunchy), and the chocolate simply brings a little bit of sweetness to the product as a whole. The partner loves chocolate but is always concerned about her waistline, so she's absolutely in love with this peanut chocolate mix that only has a little bit of extra sweetness. She much prefers the more subtle flavours. The number of uses and the ease of spreading is much more important for me, so this will definitely get a lot of use from both of us.

Definitely on the higher end of the price spectrum, but still within acceptable bounds. It's in a similar price range to Pics, which also comes with peanut oil, so I'd definitely be keeping an eye out for it when I need some variety for my toast.

We were all looking forward to tasting this product for the first time. The children enjoy chocolate hazelnut spread on their sandwiches so we thought there might be some similarities, but the nut flavour of Peanut Butter & Chocolate is much stronger than that of hazelnuts. The result is quite unique if slightly unexpected. We decided to have it with crepes so that there would be nothing to disguise the flavour. Each crepe was spread with the peanut butter while it was still hot from the pan. This had the effect of softening the spread so it was easy to apply a thin layer. We then rolled the crepes and arranged them on plates - two crepes apiece as they were quite small. The children decorated them with plain Greek yoghurt and pieces of strawberry.

I was surprised at just how good the combination was. The peanut butter is not really sweet so it appealed to the adults just as much as the children. The yoghurt was a perfect addition as it meant the dessert was not too sticky; when we first tasted the product straight from the jar, we found it was quite thick, even after we had stirred the contents well. Adding the yoghurt meant that the combination was creamier and did not stick to the roofs of our mouths.

The high point was reading the list of contents on the label. There were no artificial preservatives or other additives at all - just peanuts, cocoa and sugar in that order. Where children are involved, it is always a positive to see that the ingredients are as natural as possible; we are not into junk food in our family, and always like to choose products that are good for us. My daughter often stirs plain peanut butter into the children's breakfast oatmeal so she is going to try this product instead. They would enjoy the added chocolate flavour and it would make a nice change.

Other ways in which she plans to use it are in a smoothie and to top a plain cake in place of conventional icing. Meanwhile, I have already tried it on bread (both plain and toasted) and found that it was not so good with plain white loaves (too sticky) but totally delicious on whole grain slices. I was even daring enough to add a little to a beef stir fry along with a dash of chilli sauce, and was pleasantly surprised by the result. It was not possible to taste the chocolate but the peanut flavour did come out and it gave a richer taste to the dish.

All of us would buy it again now that we know how versatile it is. However, the crepes would be hard to beat. They were so nice that we will be making them again at some stage. The bonus it that they are so quick to make and taste delicious.
