Product reviews...
We have a house with little eco-warriors so try to do all we can to reduce our plastic consumption. One area that this is possible and makes a big difference is by replacing our shampoo in a bottle with a shampoo bar. We have tried a couple of brands and were excited to see how Ahhh It's All Good stood up against the others.
The round bar comes in a recyclable box and the scent when we opened it was of manuka honey and almond, it was just enough without being too strong. We liked that this bar will provide 50-70 washes - a small bar goes a long way. I used it on my two boys in the bath - a few rubs of the bar on wet hair and it foamed and soaped up a very good lather. I was impressed with the cleanliness of their hair and the ease of using it. The scent was liked by the boys and left their hair smelling nice and looking shiny. We have a block dock to store the bar in when finished so it dried overnight for the next time we used it.
Overall this bar at a cost of $12.99 is economical. We liked the scent of the Manuka honey and almond and will look to try other scents in the Ahhh It's All Good range. What we like the most is that this is a New Zealand made product created from natural ingredients and is not tested on animals.
I absolutely adore the simplicity of a Shampoo Bar, I fell in love with them the last review round when I was given the Lavender variety to review. Although I loved the smell, I unfortunately found that when I used the shampoo alone it would completely dry my hair out and I found I would have to lather heaps of conditioner in my hair before it would feel shiny and manageable. I have since found out that it was suited for fine/oily type hair, so I have been dying to try a bar which was more suited to normal hair.
When I opened the box I was surprised by how subtle the smell was. I was expecting a very strong honey smell slapping me in the face but instead I found myself having to sniff the bar before I got any aroma. It is lovely and reminds me of a young baby who has just had a shower. It smells so sweet and innocent. I do really like it.
As with the lavender bar it is so easy to use. Wet your hair and then rub it it over the head a couple of times and you fell the shampoo lathering up. It is amazing how much is produced by only patting your head 2 or 3 times. Give your hair a good scrub and then rinse out. Beyond simple. I find with this bar if in a hurry or just because your in quarantine in your own house a shampoo is enough, I do not even need to use the conditioner. It leaves my hair feeling so soft and visually shiny. I also find that I only have to wash my hair every two or three days as it is looking good, so a body shower is very welcome.
I also like that one bar can last up to fifty to seventy washes and I feel even though it is being by myself and my husband on a regular occasion it is retaining its shape really well. My only real issue is when placing it on the bath rack as it is wet that it sometimes sticks when you go to use it next. Besides that it is a dream product. As it hardly takes up any room, it will be perfect, when life returns to normal and we can travel again.
I really do love the shampoo bar and I don't think I will ever return to bottled shampoo ever again as it feels great and its nice knowing that it only uses natural ingredients and that it is cruelty free. Also it is nice that I have had comments about how shiny my hair is in the past couple of days.
Recently I was in Pak 'n Save and saw that the merchandiser for these shampoo bars was one of the tables offering advice and discounted products. I was interested but seeing the price it did put me off a bit as I wasn't sure it was going to be worth it so when I noticed that KIWIreviews was offering a chance to try this I thought it would be a good chance.
I really liked the packaging as it was easy to read and I could see it without problems (I usually have to ask my son as I struggle with small printing but this was great and easy to read) and the instructions were clear. I opened it and thought that the bar is a bit small to last at least 50 washes as I have long thick hair and I find that liquid shampoo only lasts about two weeks before the bottle is empty. First shower I noticed that my hair felt better after use and that it washed out my hair a lot faster than the liquid shampoo did. I also noticed that the bar looked like I hadn't used it at all. I continued to use this and after two weeks I notice that the bar is a lot smaller than when I started so it will last a lot longer than the liquid shampoo but not sure the bar would last anywhere near the 50 washes claimed on the box.
Would I continue to use this? I sure would, it makes my hair feel a lot better than the liquid shampoo does, my hair feels soft and still clean after two days, using liquid shampoo if I didn't wash my hair every second day it would feel oily and horrible. I should be able to use the very last of the shampoo as it is a bar and not stuck inside a bottle. Although it is a bit more expensive, overall it costs about the same as the liquid shampoo but makes my hair feel a lot better.
I had a look at the website to see if there were any options for tea tree oil as I work with young children and sometimes children come to school with nits so my ideal shampoo would be a bar of shampoo with tea tree oil so I don't get nits passed on from kids at work.
I have read many comments and articles about shampoo bars but I have never been game enough to take the plunge. I love the idea of less waste and less chemicals but the price has been a little off putting. I mean what if it doesnt work or I really dislike it? Then I received the chance to try and review the Ahhh... Manuka honey and almond shampoo bar and now I see what everyone was talking about.
First thing I noticed with the bar was the wonderful smell. It was such a refreshing smell, the sweetness of the honey and almond. Then I examined the box heading straight to the back and the ingredients. I'm use to seeing large words I have no idea what they are but not here and if so it was explained. I love the easy to read symbols along the bottom which show what it is free from like paraben and cruelty free. Looking around the rest of the box I see it's made locally and that the how to use instructions are clearly on the back of the box. I like how the box is a natural cardboard colour with a little hint of yellow in the shape of the honeycomb and that it is recyclable.
So there is two females in our house ready to try this. We opened the packet and there was a tan coloured round soap bar with bumps sort of like the honeycomb. We followed the instructions and proceeded to wash my young daughters hair. Her hair is just below the shoulders and very thin. I was able to rub it into her hair easily and got a really good lather quickly. I gave it a good rub and washed it out. She seemed to be very happy with the results. Next it was my turn. I again found it didn't take much to get a good lather. I really liked the bumps that gently massaged my head. After washing it out I did find that it felt like it had stripped everything from my hair and it was rather dry.
We continued to use the shampoo bar and I found that the more I used it the better it felt. Now after nearly a week it feels great after washing, very light and soft. I also noticed that there was a faint clean smell in our hair instead of the heavy fragrance smell. I like that only a small amount is required and being a bar it's not being squirted straight down the drain. I have left my bar out of the shower so it does dry out between washes as stated on the box.
Overall, we are very happy with the Ahhh... manuka honey and almond shampoo bar. It's been nearly a week and we have used so little compaired to the liquid shampoo bottles. The price of $12.99 is quite a bit more than I would usually spend on shampoo but with less waste and more washed this could turn out a better option for us. I saw on the box that it says 50-70 washes per bar. If this is the case then there will be a huge savings for us as we don't get anywhere near that with regular shampoo.
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone interested. Unfortunately I didn't try this until after Christmas otherwise everyone may have received shampoo bars from me. I have to say I do love this product.
I had never used a product like this before, and neither had the others we were visiting. The idea of a solid cake of shampoo had never crossed my mind, although after all I use bars of soap all the time, so maybe I should have been aware of its existence. My daughter assured me that she buys both the shampoo and the conditioner in this format, so I guess I had some catching up to do.
We were a good mix of people to test out the shampoo bar, ranging from one young woman with long hair to an older man who has only just enough hair left to warrant using shampoo at all. The three friends we were staying with are all game to try a new product, so the shampoo was placed in the shower and I waited for the comments to come in. On reading the list of ingredients, I had even wondered if the shampoo might be edible! (Yes, I tasted it, and it was not!)
After three days and a total of 15 uses, the bar appeared to be no smaller although everyone reported that they got a good lather from very little product. One thing we did notice was that the wet bar needs to be placed somewhere suitable after each use - a dry facecloth is ideal, but a soap dish with draining holes would also be fine. If left on a flat bathroom surface it will slowly melt - we lost the equivalent of one shampoo dose before realising this.
Everyone mentioned the way it left their hair soft and pleasantly perfumed. I also liked the little knobs on the underside which provided a gentle massaging effect when it was rubbed on my hair. However, after the first few uses, those knobs had reduced to the point of being almost flat. A pity as I quite liked the sensation on my scalp. The other two women agreed with me whereas the men had not noticed!
We all liked the packaging as there is virtually no waste - the cardboard box is recyclable and takes up little space. No big bottles to store and then dispose of. All the necessary information is printed on the box itself including a list of ingredients and instructions for use. When we return home, we will take the shampoo with us and keep a record on the number of washes we have managed to get. The box says 50-70 per bar so it will be interesting to see!
