This book celebrates a New Zealand Christmas with the decorations of shells, pohutukawa blooms, and native birds the soft whimsical style of water painting brings the joy of a New Zealand Christmas to life. The gentle rhyming story appeals to children and makes an enjoyable read aloud story with parents. My children happily gathered around for a snuggle while I read the book to them arguing over who was getting a better view of the clever illustrations.

Christmas stirs up a lot of excitement and sharing Christmas books is a special tradition for our family and this book makes the perfect heart warming read that shows how everyone comes around to help make Christmas special, being a time to spend with our loved ones helping one another out and being there for each other. A tale much more important than the traditional present giving theme of Christmas stories this one gives children another look at the special parts of Christmas time like decorating the tree and thinking about other people.

We loved this story and will treasure it for many Christmases to come one I would highly recommend to other parents as a great Christmas idea. My son really thought hard about the lonely tree and with themes of forestry mentioned upon it can also be away to invoke those thoughts around the effect forestry has and why one tree could be left on its own.

I read this book The Lonely Little Tree to my 6 month old baby who appeared to really enjoy it and was giggling away and looking at the pictures on the pages. I got a bit tongue twisted reading the book I do not know if it is just me or if others may have as well. I found words similar and trying the read the sentence I got twisted up in the words. I love the illustrations and the pictures were lovely and colourful and eye catching. I love how it adds a lot of New Zealand culture to the book and the use of New Zealand birds.

The story line is great and I like how the birds dress up the tree to make the tree fell better. A pretty Christmas tree standing on its own with the birds perched on the tree. A nice story about not leaving anyone out at Christmas time is what I got from it.

I read it with my ten year old who really enjoyed it and thought the tree looked really good at the end, and he loved the pictures and the use of New Zealand birds. He wanted to take the book to school to share with his teacher which he did and the teacher read it out to the class, my son came home and said they all enjoyed it. He said the school library would be keen to get it in. My son also read the book with his cousin who also enjoyed it. A well written New Zealand book, would make a good Christmas gift.
