Product reviews...
I am a very big coffee fan so for my birthday a year or so ago my husband bought me an excellent little portable coffee maker that takes Nespresso type pods. When the Movenpick capsules appeared on the KIWIreviews list of available products I requested them with pleasure - wanting to try and find an alternative to the capsules previously used - and also interested to see how these would stack up flavour wise.
The Classico variation has packaging that is very similar to the Expresso variation, and I think that it would be very easy to get them confused. However, the box itself opens sideways - not from the top or bottom, meaning less chance of picking it up the wrong way and dropping capsules everywhere. It also makes it very easy to see how many are left when you are thinking about purchasing some more. The capsules themselves are blue in colour - again the same as the Expresso variation meaning they could get muddled. The capsules fit perfectly into the chamber of my portable coffee maker and operate in exactly the same was as the Nespresso, at just a fraction of the cost. However, there is still the very important criteria of taste, as coffee is not worth all the beans harvested if it is bitter, burnt or in another way tastes awful.
I made both myself and my husband a coffee, choosing to not at milk to mine at first, instead taking the chance to taste the coffee "pure"so to speak. It is honestly a really nice coffee - not too strong, but with enough kick to get you up and at-em, without leaving you wired for the rest of the day. In my opinion I could drink this all day, as it is quite a nice mellow coffee - worth savouring and not rushing through it.
I think that you could use these capsules in many a way - to make iced coffee or mocha, in a coffee cake or muffins, make coffee ice cubes to add to milk... and the list goes on. I opted to have my second cup a little differently to my first - and added milk. No shock there - it made a really nice coffee that way too. My 4 year old - who likes the taste of coffee even commented that it tasted a bit sweet - which to be honest, I do not think I tasted.
I would definitely buy these again, as they are a great price and perform just as the more expensive capsules do. I would love to see Movenpick do a variety box of capsules - maybe three flavours to the box, meaning I could try a few others.
I have had a nespresso machine for a good while now (a couple of years and long enough for the plastic to start to show signs of wear). We use it regularly along with a plunger and an espresso machine so we drink quite a bit of coffee in our house. I was keen to try this variety as I have not found a nespresso branded capsule that is ideal for me. I have tried a number of other brands but became a bit concerned about potential damage to the machine.
The capsules looked exactly as I would expect and I found they processed pretty much exactly the same as the higher priced nespresso ones. I liked the blue colour as it means they would not get confused if they got loose in the pantry. The look and smell was as I expected, good and clear not to much crema (it was not advertised as a strong blend so that is expected). I have my coffee black and my partner has his white so we were both able to try these successfully. My first attempt I felt I needed to top the coffee with a bit of hot water but that was the usual case for me in the mid morning, it might also be a product of the cups I use. The next try I left the water out initially and then added it once the coffee had cooled a bit.
I found the taste perfect for a later in the day coffee. This is not the coffee to get my bouncing out of bed but more the middle of the day keep you running variety. I liked the flavour, strong but not bitter. I felt it tasted more kiwi than European which surprised me as I was expecting more of an Italian or French vibe about it which I didn't get which was great for me. The aroma was a good sturdy kiwi coffee smell to me.
It is a good middle of the road coffee that will be a staple in our pantry for both guests and ourselves. Not the strong kind but then it never said it was so it's basically a good example of a 4/10 strength coffee with no loss of flavour for me. Partner said it didn't get too weak tasting when he added milk but he is keener to try a stronger blend. It was perfect for my long black and I will be having many more.
I am in pursuit of the perfect capsule coffee so I was keen to try these Classico Lungo from Movenpick of Switzerland. I liked the box. it opens well so that if you wanted to stack up boxes with capsules in them that would work well. the box has a perforated opening and the capsules are nicely stacked. On the inside of the perforation is a little blurb about the coffee having been grown on Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. Good to know and certainly makes me happy about buying these.
The capsules fit in a Nespresso machine and at 65 cents per capsule are great value for money. I have a definite taste preference for Lungos and this Lungo is definitely a new favourite . At a 4 strength this is fairly mild for my liking but is extremely smooth with a nice crema. This is definitely my new favourite capsule as the intensity is perfect for an afternoon coffee with absolutely no bitterness.
I would happily buy this if it were in my supermarket as I like this more than others I've tried from the supermarket shelf. I'm not sure that I would go to the effort of ordering online but only because I like to just buy capsules in smaller quantities. If I order it always seems best value to buy a larger amount. I would however recommend these capsules especially if you like a mild Lungo. They are definitely great quality and good value for the price.
We were all enthusiastic about this coffee. As we had a couple of days to test it, we took our time. First we brewed a standard coffee apiece. Two of us take our coffee black but the third one likes milk, so we were able to check it in different ways. We all thought the taste was very smooth and the flavour distinctive but not too strong - it did not have that burnt flavour you can get with some brands.
The packet is well designed both visually and in terms of functionality. The top of the pack opens up so that the capsules are accessible and you can check to see exactly how many are left. The product information is clearly presented so that you can determine what strength the contents are, and what the machine setting should be. It is essential to know this as it is easy to damage a machine by using the wrong setting. This was something I had not previously been aware of, but my friends explained it to me. Full marks to Movenpick for providing the important information clearly and without too much unnecessary details cluttering up the label.
Having tried our conventional cups of coffee and evaluated the packet, we went on to try some other ways of using it. The weather was very hot with high humidity, so we opted for iced coffee. This was a popular choice! We prepared it with coffee crystals and served it in tall glasses with ice and a large blob of whipped cream on top. This made a perfect drink for a hot day; when we were half way through drinking it, one of our number had the bright idea of adding a splash of dark rum. That changed the flavour somewhat but nobody complained!
I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of coffee. I have tasted some pretty bad coffee in my time (mainly of the instant variety - an abomination by definition!). But I have also tasted some wonderful blends which have the perfect mix of flavour intensity and smoothness, and this one certainly lives up to expectations. As an everyday choice, it would be perfect as a breakfast drink to kick start the day. It has an enticing aroma and just enough strength to wake you up gently. It is smooth on the palate with no hint of bitterness. What more can you ask from a caffeinated drink?
