As a heavy user of my Sodastream machine I am always keen to try new flavours. When I saw the root beer flavour come available I was very happy to try it out. As someone with a slight American background Root beer is a favourite past time for my family but is rather hard to get cheaply over here. If you've never tried Root beer, it is close to a mix between a cola ginger beer and is extremely refreshing on a hot day.

As always the biggest drawcard of Sodastream is the fact you are saving on packaging and you also save on cost of buying single cans / bottles. With roughly 50 servings per bottle you're looking at 20c per glass or even less if you get the bottles when Briscoes have their occasional sale LOL Icon

On opening the bottle the aroma is very evident and is one that brings back a lot of memories of summer. Getting the mixture right for flavour took about 3 goes, for my taste I filled the syrup to just below the line on the cap which gave it a nice refreshing non-overpowering taste. I was really surprised at the quality of this syrup. I have tried saspiralla and root beer from a lot of companies and this would be one of my favourites.

If you are looking for something to use root beer for, the biggest one I would recommend is pulled pork. Marinating the pulled pork overnight in a over fizzy (give it about 4-6 burps of the button) root beer and garlic then slow cooking in the oven for about 8 hours makes one of the best flavoured pork roasts you will ever eat. (make sure you use a bone-in cut not a boneless cut) I tried this out the first night I got the Root Beer in my hands and it was great.

This is one flavour that will be added to our regular Sodastream pantry fills when Briscoes eventually has their next sale :) Certainly deserves perfect tens in my book.

I was keen to try this root beer syrup. We lived in Canada for a year and it was definitely the flavour of choice for my husband while we were tripping around. We would call in to numerous A&W's (bit like McD's) while travelling around and my husband would order a cold root beer in a handle. I myself was always happy with just a mouthful or two as it was never a drink flavour of choice for me.

Since being home I buy the odd A&W root beer in the can but it never brought back the memories quite like the soda stream syrup does. The smell of the syrup (yes like deep heat) and the taste is just like that we bought while in Canada. I suppose the hardest thing with adding syrup is to make sure we get just the right amount. To little tastes like medicine, too much it is too sweet.

Once I worked out the right measurements of syrup to get the required taste I shared this with my husband (the root beer fan). He was pleasantly surprised at how it bought back memories. He was definitely keen to keep drinking it (although he did tell me I should have used cold water). I introduced my 3 yr old son to it also and he too enjoyed the taste. For me however I think I will stick to a couple of mouthfuls every now and then and leave the rest for my husband.

I thought I would be adventurous about trying some new flavours, I have never tried Root Beer and when given some to taste I had a sip. A friend commented on the taste and said it tasted a bit like liquorice so that made me take a sniff and I'm so very glad I had a sip without sniffing or I would have given up on just the smell. It smelt a bit like medication but tasted a lot better. My 15 year old daughter had a sniff and she said it smelt "like old socks", not sure how she knows what old socks smell like lol

I will be looking and seeing if I can find something to use the root beer in for baking as I'm not that big a fan of putting things into my drink so just the thought of putting ice cream into a drink is enough to send me hiding in a corner.

I will be buying this again without a doubt, there are some great flavours from SodaStream and some that I'm not willing to try and I'm so glad I had the chance to taste some. I would highly recommend this drink and with summer coming up it would be a good time to get some in, not sure the kids would like it (I don't have adventurous kids) but I know I will drink it.

I've had Root Beer in the past, some taste good and some taste foul as anything so I was eager to try this.

Opening it up I was delighted that it smelled just like it has always smelled, to me it is a delightful mixture of a dash of the smell of liquorice and a huge smell of Deep Heat, yup, it does smell like Deep Heat (wouldn't know if it tastes the same though LOL Icon). Had to whip some up and give it a taste and it was so good, better than half the Root Beers I've had before, just the right smell and taste.

The kids get to have a treat of juice or fizzy (depending on what we have at the time) if they finish a full bottle of water and so I decided to give them this for their treat this time. My three year old enjoyed it and drank about half of what I gave her (feeding issues so doesn't drink as much as a normal three year old), my five year old guzzled it down and wanted more whilst my six year old had some but then wanted to save the rest for the next day. I decided to have some with whiskey and all I could taste was the whiskey, but that wasn't too bad.

All round a nice drink and one I would buy again.

Having never had root beer before, I cannot compare the flavour of this syrup with the flavour of actual root beer, but I can tell you this: this is not a flavour that I would call "incredibly appealing". My parents and several other reviewers said that this drink smelled like "Deep Heat", I do not entirely know what Deep Heat smells like, nor entirely what the stuff even is, but I think I could agree to those statements. By what information I have gathered, and also by some educated guesswork, deep heat must be some sort of volatile-substance-based evaporant used by the sporty types, and this drink did have that kind of smell, so it all matches up.

As the scent of a substance is a vital component of it's resulting taste, the vapour smell seeped into the taste of the drink, so in short: it smelled like deep heat, and tastes like deep heat. The taste was bearable, and I was still able to take big gulps, but it is currently a bit unpleasant. I am positive that, as I continue drinking this stuff, I will adjust to the flavour. The mixture was well made, it diluted well, not too sweet or strong, and vice-versa.

The price is good, it fits within the goldilocks zone, and is a good price for a wide and diverse variety of people with different sized wallets. The flavour, as I said, unordinary, and a bit outside my comfort range, but I'll take it. Overall, I think that I can easily try and continue to have this flavour, as I reject the prospect of abandoning the sodastream machine! LOL Icon Enjoy!

When I was younger, I used to read a lot of Sweet Valley High books and daydream about sipping on root beer with friends. When I finally got to try root beer I was not all that impressed with it. But then I was 11 years old, and my taste buds hadn't matured. It was a while before I went back for another try of root beer. When I did, it was called sarsaparilla which always made me think of the wild west and saloon bars with cow boys and the like.

Root beer or sarsaparilla tastes a little medicinal. I love the taste of it, and it is often my drink of choice when I am the sober driver for the night. It tastes a bit like an alcoholic drink, without the kick. So I was well aware of what I could expect when I requested this sodastream goodie. I fired up the sodastream straight away, with chilled water. Added the syrup to my fizzed water.

The smell of the syrup had that familiar medicinal smell to it. And the taste? softer than my usual root beer, sweeter too but still very very nice. Very cost effective too, as I usually get four bottles for about $6. I can get way more root beer for cheaper going the sodastream way. I will be purchasing this syrup again when this bottle runs out.

I decided to use the root beer in my baking today. Miss 7 and I made root beer chocolate cakes for afternoon tea. She poured in some butter, broke the eggs into the bowl and then added 2/3 of a cup of root beer. She commented on the smell as it went in and asked if it was medicine. I told her it was a nice drink but that it did taste a little like medicine. We mixed in the dry ingredients and then baked our cake. The cake came out moist and she was very impressed with the taste even without icing. She said that the root beer gave it a savoury taste that complimented the chocolate. I'm not sure about the savoury, but to me it really did sit well together.
