Bear Flies High product reviews

What child doesn't imagine being able to fly? Well, Bear is no different. When he sees seagulls at the beach whirling and diving, he must learn how. Luckily, there are four children who know exactly how to make that happen: Take a trip to an amusement park and play on all the rides. "Swoopy swoopy swoopitty swoop"!An exhilarating story that showcases Rosen's signature lyrical style, "Bear Flies High" is another perfect read-aloud with a familiar and lovable character.

Michael Rosen is such a well known author and has been for many years due to the success of his book "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" an absolute favourite of mine as an Early Childhood Teacher. SO when I was visiting a book shop one day and browsing through the children's books as I often do I was beyond excited to see a new book out by Michael Rosen 'Bear flies High'.

At $27.99 it was a little bit pricey compared to other books that were available but because of the Author and because it did come with a CD I decided that perhaps it would totally be worth it so I grabbed it anyway! The front cover shows a picture of what looks like it is going to be a very exciting book full of adventure with an illustration of a group of children and a bear going for a ride in a roller coaster over what looks to be the sea. The colours were bright and colourful.

The book follows a sequence of a game similar to that of 'Follow the Leader' with the bear taking the lead, with the 4 children following his moves and actions through the entire story. Together they go on many adventures throughout a theme park, including waiting at the gate, going for rides in cups and saucers, in haunted houses, and on roller coaster rides. There is certainly a lot going on in the book and the pictures demonstrate well what is happening throughout each part of the story, though I have to admit that perhaps the book could have done with a bit of extra colour added to it as being a book about adventure and excitement it does appear a bit dull in places.

The story itself I personally didn't particularly like and the children in my daycare centre didn't seem to really hold interest to it either, perhaps because they have never been to a theme park or because there were a lot of repetitive description words such as "whirly whirl, whirly whirl, whirly whirlity whirl" which actually is quite hard to read after a few pages. The story itself didn't really capture your attention nor did the CD which sounded very drainy and un-enthusiastic to listen to. Definitely a huge disappointment for a Michael Rousen book.

I sadly have to say I wouldn't buy this book, it's honestly probably not what you would expect!

Product reviews for listing 9238: The Squeakling: The tale of Spike, Max and the tiny intruder -  Written by Kristin Kelly

Product image for The Squeakling: The tale of Spike, Max and the tiny intruderMax and Spike are troubled. Their owners have brought home a new baby, and all the attention is on this "squeakling". Studying it closely, they note that it likes to shake things and make big noises. And it smells bad!

Plan A is to act like the squeakling. FAIL! Plan B is to make themselves helpful so they bring in the washing (dragging it through the dirt), clean the dishes (lick them). and water the pot plants (by weeing on them!) ... more...
