This episode of the doctor who seems to be the strange love child of Stephen Moffitt, Ridley Scott and Christopher Nolan but it still a rather fun and very confusing at times episode.

It's Christmas Eve and Clara awakens to discover Santa is on her roof, before she knows it she's back on the TARDIS and off to the cold and the chill of the North Pole. Here they learn the truth behind where they left off at the end of the season and we meet a new alien, dream crabs, which take both the characters and the audience on one heck of a ride as we try to figure out which is the dream and which is the reality.

There's some good special effects going on here, from the aliens to Santa and his sleigh to the self moving toys. I watched the special feature on the DVD which gives a look behind the scenes and I love seeing moments where all are meant to be serious but they crack up laughing. We see a real vulnerability to Clara here as she deals with her loss of Danny (a very sweet moment in here about that) and with Coleman signed up for Season Nine, I'm keen to see where she and the Doctor go from here and how they grow.

The Doctor Who Christmas specials have become a firm fixture on our 'must watch around Christmas' list and so as soon as I was able to I set this to record on MySky and on Boxing Day this was recorded. It is a real family affair here, sitting down to watch it, my husband and I, our three kids, my mother and our friend and her kids. I was most eager to see how Santa and the Doctor would work together, considering how practical this Doctor and how sceptical he seems. I was also very eager to see how Clara was coping after the events of the season eight finale.

This is one rather confusing episode at times, the aliens put you in a dream state but the problem is working out if you are still in a dream state or have you gotten out of it and so forth, it can get very confusing but at the same time it really adds to it. There are some great fun moments in this special episode and there are some great lines plus a few touching ones (my favorite line I can't quote without it being a spoiler for season eight) and whilst there are some freaky moments this is another fab Doctor Who episode that I will be owning without a doubt. Nick Frost was awesome as Santa and I'd be happy seeing him pop in again.
