Poppycat is a story about a loveable fluffy cat called Poppy that loves to do everything her owner does. Nice watercolour illustrations and an easy to follow story made this a great story for my 5 year old girl and I to read together. Minimal words and short sentences with big colourful pictures made this story really easy to understand what was happening. In essence the little girl has tasks she has to do during the day which are very likely the same as any little girl reading the story. Things like getting dressed, pouring milk and tying shoelaces. She finds it difficult and so does Poppy Cat. Although Poppy Cat, is more or less being the destructive playful side of these tasks as cats normally are.
I explained the play on words with the title as being Copy Cat - Poppy Cat and how the cat copies everything to an Ooooohhhhhh moment which made even more sense for my young girl.
As a hardcover book this is a really nice story that is easy to keep on the bookshelf in good condition due to it not being a softcover - they usually get the harshest treatment and beatings so this hardcover book will stand the test of time. My 4 year old coming up will also love the story as he loves cats and the playful way she gets into things as a curious cat in the story that she shouldn't be.
This book is a hardcover which explains the price. You would not often price a picture book at $29 for a softcover and certainly not without a CD in addition. My initial thoughts on the book was that it was quite a short read. There is maybe one or two sentences per page and the language is relatively simple.
As a parent a short read can be good for those nights when they have pushed their bedtime out a ways and you need to claim back 5 - 10 minutes. That is the type of night that suits a book like this. You get the comfort of knowing they have been read to, with the extra comfort that they will be asleep within time as well.
The story is told from a child's perspective about their pet cat, Poppy. The pictures are water colour and they are really quite whimsical and sweet. When I first read this to my eldest daughter she was very taken with the cat. She pointed out the things happening in each page and we guessed at the story as it moved along. She laughed a lot at some of the mischief and I laughed too because I could just imagine the situations.
I have read this a couple of times now. My youngest daughter loved the story as well, and enjoyed flipping through the pages pointing out the "meow" on each page. Lastly, my eldest refused to do her homework reader one night because she said she had already read it. So I presented this book to her and asked that she read it instead. She did so, and quite well too. I know now, that I have a go-to reader available on the shelf that doesn't look or feel like a reader. So it would make a good reader for primary-aged new readers as well.
