Product reviews...
I was delighted to be able to be given the chance to try 'New Generation' Liquorice combo pack. When visiting shows I always make my way to this stand to not only taste the raspberry liquorice nougat but to also buy a pack. This is definitely one of my favourites, but because of this it is the only one I normally purchase.
By being given a chance to try other flavours in a review has been very beneficial to me as I would feel like a real guts standing at a stand trying each and every one at a show.
The combo pack is definitely worth it for a sweet tooth liquorice fan like me. I was amazed at how much was packed into this container. The price of this liquorice I have always thought as being higher than I would normally pay but by unpacking the container you realise you are getting far more than you expect.
I loved the variety, there was: plain liquorice, straps, chocolate combo, allsorts, nougat, and fudge. I was taken back when I bit into one of the fudge thinking it would be sweet, however was not as sweet as the others but had a lovely liquorice flavour. I loved the texture and taste of this. I can be a bit fussy with liquorice allsorts and depending on the brand either love or hate the taste. New Generation has won me over with the taste of their allsorts.
One thing that I think there could be an improvement on is the packaging. I find that the containers that they are stored in are not completely airtight so the liquorice can dry out a little too much for my liking. Also if the lid is not closed carefully it just pops open - this only invites you to have yet another piece.
As you can guess this combo pack did not last long in my house - thanks for the opportunity to try others flavours in your range. I will be visiting stands at future shows.
Put liquorice in front of me and you would be lucky for it to stay there long enough to share. I love liquorice and I always enjoy having a little sample when I go to the various shows.
When I picked up the Combo Pack to review, I had to hold myself back so that I didn't just demolish the whole lot before I could check it out properly. My husband is also a liquorice lover so there had to be rules set when the pack entered the house.
I took time to taste each individual piece and I have got to say that I enjoyed every piece in the pack. The Irish Moss and the liquorice strap do stand out as my favourites if I had to make a choice. As I moved through the pieces, I saw that not only was there strap liquorice around the sides of the packet, but there was also more at the bottom. I think that every tiny bit of space in the container was carefully filled up with liquorice. I certainly wouldn't complain about that!
I had to think a bit about how to get creative with what to do with a container of liquorice other than simply eat it (still a good option of course). I then thought that my father's 75th birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and I will need to decorate it. I gave it a test run - I sliced up pieces of the allsorts with a sharp knife and made letters as shown in the picture to put in the top of the cake. Dad loves liquorice too and I am sure he will love the novel decoration on the top of the cake, as will the various kids in attendance.
I like the fact that this is a combo pack, as I got a chance to enjoy a variety. I think that if the pack were all one type of liquorice, I would have got sick of it and that would be a terrible shame.
This is the sort of treat I would consider purchasing at the shows. The whole family would enjoy sharing them and there is plenty of choice for all tastebuds. The price does seem higher than what I would pay for sweets in the shops but I know that people often spend a bit more on special treats/foods at shows than they would normally. At the end of the day, I was delighted to be able to test out this combo pack and I would recommend it to all liquorice lovers out there.
When I showed my family this amazing tub of licorice and fudge delights, their eyes became wide and their mouths even wider. I had to fight both of my children off to get in to the cupboard, where I stored it very high up. For the last few days we have been having a few each out of the tub as our dessert and frankly there is still 2/3s of the tub left. The volume of this tub is excellent.
I must admit, I have taken a few of the fudge pieces and nougat pieces and chopped them up a bit, so we could all get a good taste of each. But I didn't have to do that. It was simply the fairness police in me that saw me do that. I have also used some of the all sorts in baking, including a ice cream I made by softening ice cream and adding kiwifruit juice and chopped up all sorts. That was delicious.
For $18, this would be the ultimate gift for Christmas or a birthday. It's one massive step up from the humble biscuit box for a family gift, that is for sure! Last night, my eldest tried to get away with a whole strap of the red licorice and I can't say I blamed her. The whole underneath of the tub is lined with straps of licorice. It's about 4 quite long pieces. I thought it gave it a nice basket look.
Tonight my youngest was doing her usual dance for dessert. This involves her skipping about and singing, and pointing at the tub. When I opened it up, I said take one only. In both hands went and she tried to fill both of her fists. I said "hey, no. Put that back". She dropped one and then took them to her high chair. Then she came back for more. When I said no, she hurried to get as many in her mouth as possible to "hide them" so I would give her more.
To say this has been a huge hit in my house is an understatement. I even have to race my husband to the tub after the kids are in bed. I'm really surprised that there is ANYTHING left. The fudge is delicious and feels like a cross between jersey caramel and fudge. The nougat was really different. Tasty, and I think the yellow licorice was my favourite in the nougat presentation. The chocolate wrapped pieces were a big hit as were the Irish Moss. I will definitely be looking out for this one again!
I come from a family of liquorice lovers and at Christmas time Mum (the biggest liquorice fan I know) always buys a couple of tubs of New Generation Liquorice products for the family to graze on while we unwrap presents. Once I saw the combo tub it brought back fond memories. This pack is roughly 50% liquorice allsorts and the remainder is fudge, liquorice logs, nougat, liquorice straps, Irish moss and toffees.
The first to disappear were the fudge. There were only 4 pieces in our tub but 3 varieties. It was so creamy and delicious. Next most popular were the nougat. There seemed to be 3 varieties of this too. I don't think Miss 4 and Miss 5.5 had ever tried it before but the loved it. The raspberry liquorice both in the straps and the logs were very popular too. I was impressed at how the liquorice straps were placed neatly around the side of the tub and over the base.
I decided to use the liquorice allsorts to create an allsorts slice. I had seen recipes for it several times but never tried it. The slice was so easy to make (no baking needed) and very popular with everyone who tried it. The downside is my children who have never liked black liquorice now love liquorice allsorts after having them in the slice.
This combo pack is great for sharing as it will have something for everyone. It is more expensive than supermarket liquorice which makes it more of a special occasion treat. You pay for the quality. The liquorice is so soft and fresh, not like some of the cardboard liquorice I have had before. I am certain my family won't complain if I bring home any more New Generation Liquorice products.
Saying "I have a sweet tooth" is a bit of a lie... I have a mouth full of the wreckage of sweet teeth. Still... since the damage has already been done, why not indulge my passion for quality confections, eh? Which is why I was overjoyed when NGL Waikato agreed to give us some of these combo packs to test. A little bit of everything, in one handy container.
First off, the visual presentation was impeccable, with strapping around the sides and laid down as a base, then a substantial pile of allsorts, topped by toffees, irish moss, nougat and fudge, plus some assorted liquorice log pieces... it was a symphony of candy delight. And must to my surprise and pleasure, this sweet bounty was presented in a recyclable container! This is something I am really keen on, because it means I don't need to feel guilty about consuming a product and having unusable waste left over.
While I am very hard-pressed to pick a favourite, if I must I would put all of the varieties of nougat equally at the top, followed very closely by the straps. Though I am not a huge fudge fan, I tasted it and it was indeed creamy and melt-in-your-mouth, but my wife appreciates fudge far more than I so I earned some brownie points by giving them to her. But because of my dental issues, I am nervous about toffees in general, and will be saving these for later.
Overall, this a a great introduction to the New Generation Liquorice range, and I would dearly love to buy more again in future, budget permitting.
Of all the sweets that have been shelved in supermarkets across New Zealand, my favourites have to be Fudge, Jellybeans, and Licorice. After one look at the combo pack, I could see all kinds of licorice sweets, and if there is one thing I hate about sweets is the fact that eating the same type of sweet over and over again makes me feel sick, so a wide variety is definitely a good thing. When it comes to the two main types of licorice, red and black, I am one of the many people who HATE the taste of the black kind, but unfortunately, that appeared to be the most commonly used type in the sweets in this combo pack.
I also noticed that there were small slabs of fudge in this pack, now there was a matter of curiosity! Now, as I mentioned above, fudge is one of my favourite types of candy, but there was not any detectable licorice in the fudge, so I would really like to know just why it was in the pack. There was also a type of candy that I haven't had a lot, in the product picture on this page, this candy is the little white slabs with red, black, or caramel brown spots, I do not know what this type of candy is called, but one thing for sure is, it was a very interesting and addictive introduction, or possibly re-introduction, to a type of licorice candy (yes, I have a sneaking suspicion that those "spots" are chunks of licorice) that I wish this combo pack had more of.
The flavours of the items in this pack were interesting, some very familiar, like the Allsorts, and some different for good or for worse, such as the "Licorice Toffee" and those white slabs. The variety was, just to re-iterate, very good, with plenty of delicious sweets that would give me a watering mouth before eating them, and a sugar rush, as well as a bit of a sugar hangover, afterwards! The price is highly reasonable, it is nice and affordable, and it works out to about 3 cents per gram, which is hardly a rip-off. I have too say, I am kinda sad that I have already eaten my way through the entire pack, as many of the sweets in this pack were quite addictive! Thanks New Generation!
