An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.

Here is where the now iconic Walking Dead TV series began.
Rick Grimes is involved in a shoot out, his first one where he has needed to fire his gun, and awakens a while later to find that zombies have become a reality and so begins his trek to find his wife and son. The book is fast paced, it seems like every other page is a few days later but it can get a little bit annoying at times as you are left to figure things out on your own. And every time we meet a new character we are taken over everyone's story again and again.
However, the characters are fascinating and the author knows how to work the story to make you breathe a sigh of relief, thinking they will finally be safe, and then WHAM! more zombies. You never really know what to expect with these stories, but you know it's probably not going to be good. The artwork isn't anything amazing but then again I wouldn't really want the artwork to blow me away when I'm reading a nitty gritty story about people trying to survive a hideous world.
If you like the TV show then the comic is a must read, my husband and I started them and we are now up to number 18 in the series.
