Wild About New Zealand product reviews

Gus Roxburgh is wild about New Zealand! He loves adventure, the outdoors and especially New Zealand's rugged wild lands - and what better place to enjoy all three than in New Zealand's great national parks.

FIORDLAND Gus explores Ata Whenua - the Shadowland. It's wet and wild, with towering mountains and a fragile ecosystem populated with some interesting and hardy characters.

ABEL TASMAN AND NELSON LAKES Gus visits his childhood home. He thinks he knows it well but this national park has a few deep secrets. Gus delves into the carved granite landscape to reveal its darker side.

HAURAKI GULF MARINE PARK New Zealand's unofficial national park of the sea covers 1.2 million hectares of open water and over 50 islands. Gus meets a group of passionate people who are creating a sustainable marine park for future generations.

KAHURANGI, PAPAROA AND WESTLAND The West Coast parks span low-lying wetlands, dramatic glaciers and limestone geology. Here Gus finds a primeval landscape with ancient and unusual residents.

AORAKI MT COOK The Southern Alps are dominated by New Zealand's tallest peaks and largest glaciers. Gus faces enormous challenges to better understand this stunning mountain preserve.

TONGARIRO AND WHANGANUI The central North Island is a vast plateau dominated by Mt. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro. Gus traverses this dynamic landscape then follows the Whanganui River down to the sea.

From acclaimed documentary filmmakers NHNZ comes the complete series of Wild About New Zealand as seen on TV One.

2 disc set.

This documentary truly was fascinating to watch and I would fully recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about the wonderful country we are so lucky to live in! I can't wait till my daughter is a little bit older so I can share this with her - I know it would be an asset to any family's DVD collection especially with children so curious about the natural world.

As Wild About New Zealand was a TV series, each episode is featured individually and at the start of the DVD you can select whether you just want to watch one episode in particular or watch all of the episodes in one go. Each episode is filmed at one location and explores lots of what is available in that area. Gus does a fantastic job of really exploring everything that is on offer in the area and in turn also does a wonderful job of capturing it in a mind blowing way. Laid back but formal this series was easy to watch and not one where the actors annoy you.

Not only does Gus capture the area as it is today but he also shares the Maori legends and history about each area. Animals, insects, birds, plants and any special features (such as water falls etc.) are also shared with viewers. Gus also talks with locals along the way, be it the people that go rock climbing down water falls or the drivers of diggers that clear the roads year after year due to avalanches. I was really surprised with some of these things that Gus shares - some were insects and plants I didn't even know existed... Others were places I didn't really know about at all and some of these are a mere 3hours from where I live. Needless to say there are now a lot of places in New Zealand I would like to visit!!

Totally eye opening, informative and interesting, this is a series I am so glad to have watched. I really did learn a lot and enjoyed it at the same time. I definitely recommend this to others and will be watching it again myself Smile Icon
