Pasta is a sure favourite for Miss 2, who will happily eat cooked pasta just as it is without sauce for a meal, to be honest this is probably her most requested meal, so I will often cook up a reasonable amount so that there is a bit left over for her to snack on the next day. There seems to be a lot of kid friendly pastas out there at the moment which definitely are a great selling point, we have recently tried pasta shaped as Teddy Bear's and also some shaped as Dinosaurs. During one of our more recent shops at Countdown we were down the pasta isle when Miss 2 who is cat obsessed spotted the Hello Kitty pasta sitting right on the very top shelf, 'Get that one, get that one, the cat one" she started yelling out, so naturally we got the Hello Kitty pasta for the week.
Like most other pastas out there this doesn't take long to cook, if anything it actually cooks faster due to the smaller size and shape of it, it said to allow 9 minutes cooking time, but I think it only took us about 7 minutes due to us boiling the water in the pot prior to adding the pasta. My daughter loved eating the pasta shaped as cats and told me every now and then that it's her "favourite". The shapes were of several different designs which made it even more exciting. The pasta held it's shape when cooked which I thought was impressive.
Though the pasta is slightly more expensive than the normal pasta I don't mind paying the difference if it makes Miss 2 eat dinner then it's totally worth it!
Pasta is a staple in our house we have different pasta based meals quite often as it is such a quick and easy dish to make for the kids. The kids favourite is macaroni cheese with bacon which suits me as it is such a cheap easy dish. My daughter spotted these in the supermarket when we did the groceries last week and had to have them.
It cooks just like any other pasta so it is quick and easy you get cooked pasta in about 10 minutes. The good thing is even when they are softened they hold their kitty themed shapes unless you over cook them and then they end up looking a bit funny. I found that there was hardly any broken pieces in the pack too which was good as they all had shapes. My daughter found it very exciting eating kitty shaped pasta, my son couldn't care either way as he is young enough to not notice.
They are more expensive than your average pack of pasta and it is quite a small pack so you don't really get value for money with these, but it is nice to make dinner more interesting for the kids and if it encourages them to eat healthy foods why not!!
Recently we were at the supermarket and my toddler pulled packet of this pasta off the shelf and into the trolley. The bright red bag and Hello Kitty motifs were more than enough to catch her eye. As she loves pasta and we have a lot of pasta bakes I was happy to comply.
I took this bag of pasta home and we had this as a macaroni cheese meal. I did a simple cheese sauce, with bacon pieces in it. Then I boiled the pasta and added everything to a casserole dish with more cheese to melt on top. Unlike when I usually do this with macaroni elbows, the pot was not filled to the top. That meant I wasn't going to get a full two days worth of meals out of it.
I served the pasta up to the family. My youngest daughter immediately went to eating her dinner. She picked up the pasta pieces with her fingers and happily ate everything in her bowl. Her older sister enjoyed the sauce and pasta combo. She was intrigued by the shapes but has this thing about cats being evil at the moment. So I did need to smooth the way on that one. There are other shapes in the bag though too, like an apple and a flower.
The meal was a success. The pasta is a good size and shape for children eating with their pincer grip. The pasta was tasty and satisfying for the whole family. Though it was a bit dearer than our normal pasta shapes, I thought the novelty factor was worthwhile.
