Having just read The Cry of the Icemark I was quite excited to read the sequel, although the fantasy style of books isn't for me I did end up quite enjoying The Cry of the Icemark and wondered what might happen next. As I began reading I realised we were going back to before King Redrought was King so this book had a completely different focus than the first.

In the first book the focus is on Thirrin, King Redroughts daughter and in the book she takes over after her father the King dies. We only briefly met King Redrought in the first book so it was nice to have a book more about him and how he came to be King. The book shows how he became a very loved and respected King as he fought to defend his kingdom The Icemark as a young Prince.

He like Thirrin was, was thrown into the role of leader young when his brother died in battle, and he just like Thirrin did proved himself to be a worthy and brave warrior against the enemy territory in The Land of The Ghosts. It was kind of weird with him battling against the werewolves as you find out in the first book they are good allies for the Icemark but this book was before that happened even though you read the other book first.

Just like the first book Hill describes the battles very vividly, and with a good imagination the battles could definitely come to life in your mind with how descriptive they are. I could certainly imagine some very bloody war scenes. For this reason I would say these books are good for children 10 plus, which is probably about right as they are pretty heavy reading too. And unlike the first book in this one the action starts right from page one!
