I decided that since we were sitting down to watch some random action flick tonight, I needed some dessert to help me get through it. So I offered to whip up some warm microwave cake and ice cream. My husband was very keen on this. Enter the mug cake recipe I found on KIWIreviews.

Having read the previous review, I realised that none of my mugs were probably big enough to do the job, so I opted for some bowls. Into each bowl I put the ingredients and mixed thoroughly. I didn't have any chocolate chips and decided to forgo the buttons I was going to mix in and it was looking like a massive single serve. I was not wrong.

Once cooked, this 3 minute marvel came out the size of a small supermarket mud cake. It was huge and I suddenly wondered if maybe I should have made one and split it. I layered some ice cream onto the bowl of cake and handed it to my husband. His reaction was the same "are you sure this is a single serve?"

That said, once we started to eat it was easy to finish the whole thing by ourselves. The cake has a sponge texture to it. It's not overly sweet or heavy and really does make a great base layer for whatever you want to mix in or serve with it. We had some zingy lemon ice cream and it was delicious. We will definitely be having this one again!

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I have seen these little beauties made several times by various people on facebook and really wanted to try it as it sounded so easy. It truly was a breeze and who can resist steaming hot chocolate cake especially when you can have it within about 5 minutes.

Okay so my first attempt was a disaster as I don't really own any big mugs so the overflow was really bad from having too much mixture in too small of a cup!! I ended up with a very messy microwave! Now I have a couple of mugs to use that are slightly larger and it works out perfect I watched it to start with as I was worried it was going to do the same thing and although it was scary to watch as it does rise up over the lip of the mug as long as you use a big enough mug it works perfectly.

The chocolate cake is delicious, I used white chocolate buttons which I cut up nice and small so it was so rich and sweet from the white chocolate and oh so good. Me and my partner have been having one at night once the kids are in bed with a little bit of french vanilla icecream on the top and it is a great little winter warmer. I made my daughter one for afternoon tea after school as after busting us eating one at night time she really wanted to try it and she loved it too.

I'm going to show my daughter how to do it as it would be easy enough for her to do by herself and we always have the ingredients to make them right in the pantry so it will be quite a good recipe for her to learn. Also it is a real cost effective afternoon snack as the ingredients are already there.

Perfect little cake dessert when you want something sweet but have nothing to eat in the house....I always have baking ingredients in the cupboard and I have made this mug cake several times over the years. It is super easy because everything is literally mixed in a large coffee mug.

Depending on the wattage of your microwave as mine is an old one it takes a tad longer so mine is usually cooking for 5 minutes but comes out perfect...however I substitute the chocolate chips for nutella as this gives the mug cake a gorgeous chocolatey flavour on top of adding the cocoa powder. It is super delicious!!

Adding whipped cream or just normal cream to the cake when it comes out of the microwave just makes the cake so much better. This mug cake is a favourite request of my nieces when they come they enjoy having one for pudding before bedtime and I definitely enjoy one on cold winter nights, nothing warms you up faster than a piping hot piece of chocolate cake.

It is a little scary when you first make the cake because I was worried that the mixture was going to overflow as it rose from the top of the cup but the cake seems to cook from the top down to the bottom to the cake that is cooked at the top doesn't ooze over the top...unless you have used a small cup instead of a large one then you may experience spillage...(I did that a few times at the start until I found the perfect mugs to use)

All in all a great, quick and very hassle free not to mention a tasty and delicious cake treat ready in no time at all.
