When my daughter first started solids I went out to the shops looking for something to purchase as I wanted to make her baby food from scratch rather than feed her the cans of baby food as they just didn't sit right with me. After looking at many different gadgets I ended up purchasing the Breville Stick Mixer with Accessories, working in a Daycare the Cook uses something similar and it does a great job at making baby food so I thought something similar would be ideal, and the price of this particular model I didn't find to be bad at all after all it would have a lot of other uses than just baby food.
The stick mixer is such a fantastic and easy to use kitchen gadget which puree's cooked fruits and vegetables effortlessly every time to make perfect baby food, it was great for when my daughter reached different stages as you could change the texture up just by blitzing the food less which I found super handy, and when it came to adding meat to her diet this was no problem at all for the Stick Mixer.
We are well past the baby food stage now but this still remains a well used kitchen gadget that comes out at least once a week, especially over Winter when I'm making soaps, it puree's the soap top a lovely consistency each time, however I do suggest taking meat out of the mix first if you want a chunky soap as it doesn't take long for it to get broken down here. As well as being great for soups and baby food it is also perfect for whipping cream and milky puddings up in a flash, for beating eggs, and for creating yummy home made ice creams the uses really are only limited by your imagination, just swap over the blender with the whisk depending on what you are needing to do.
It only takes minutes to click all the pieces together to use this so you don't have to waste anytime here like with many pieces of equipment I have used in the past, if there was anything I was going to complain about it would be that you have to constantly hold down the button of the machine as it doesn't just go automatically when you push it, this would be a great added feature if Breville were to make a newer model. Overall a fantastic machine that would be worth considering to buy, and it's so easy to clean afterwards being dishwasher safe.
I had never used a stick blender before and didn't own a food processor so when my son was born I needed to get something to be able to make pureed baby food. I used a stick blender when at my mums for dinner and was just so impressed at how easily it turned real food into pureed mash so decided to buy one for myself after being unsuccesful at convincing my mum to just give me hers.
Now this has become my favourite kitchen gadget and it gets used a lot! We are past the stage of needing to puree baby food but this has so many more uses around my kitchen. For making baby food it is great as you can simply put everything in give it a blitz with the stick and a few pulses and it will be smooth and lump free.
The other thing I use the stick blender for is to blitz my soups to get a nice smooth consistency. I have found that you need to let the soup cool a little before starting to blend as if it is too hot the blender doesn't pulse as well, so I let my soup cool, blend it and then heat it back up. Before buying one of these I used to just take to my soups with a potato masher so this has made things so much easier and quicker!
It is great for whipping cream and beating eggs too so I have no use for my ancient cake beater anymore as this works so much better. You can whip up eggs for a pavlova in no time and it is light weight enough that you don't get a sore arm from the repetitive movement.
This is one of my all time favourite and one of my most used appliances in my kitchen...it is so versatile that I can use it for whatever I want, chopping up an onion couldn't be easier or faster, and not to mention a perfectly chopped onion without tears!! Truly the best ever! Then with a push of a button I am able to change accessories and whip up cream in no time at all, and the whisk is perfect for whipping up only a small amount of cream too so if I am wanting to top my hot chocolate with a spoonful of cream it isn't a problem at all and I am not wasting heaps of cream. Using the stick mixer is easy and way faster than using my big cake mixer....and I no longer own a manual egg/cream beater.
The stick mixer I have has a very long electrical cord which comes in real handy I can plug it in and know it will easily reach more than half way along my bench. The cord pulls out straight every time even though when I store it away I wrap the cord around the stick mixer and sometimes when electrical cords are stored like that they have kinks in them but not this cord....it is fantastic!
The set I bought also had a chopping blade as well which I use for onions and making my own bread crumbs and the non slip rubber on the bottom of the container makes it easy to use and it doesn't slide around my benchtop while I am holding onto the stick.
The one thing I don't like is the power button on the mixer, I must keep my finger...well thumb on the on button but I would prefer a switch, because if I am whipping up cream which takes a while sometimes depending on the amount I am whipping my thumb gets almost cramp like feeling from holding down the button.
The mixer accessory is perfect for making soups smooth and creamy, and pureeing up fruit to make jams and preserves etc. It's powerful motor makes it quick and easy and the mixture comes out lump free and perfect each and every time! The price is perfect too, well I think it is because I have used it heaps and I have found it to be irreplaceable....but if I do break, or crack a part I am able to buy a replacement part from Breville which is great!
