Product reviews...
When my little boy was transitioning from the 9-12 month kids ready meals to something more 'grown up' I jumped at the opportunity of giving him Wattie's Little Kids Cheesy Ravioli as a quick meal option for those busy days when there is no time to make lunch /dinner at home from scratch. I loved the sound of it and hoped he would enjoy it. The disappointment came as soon as I opened the can. The sight of the cheap and nasty tomato sauce was enough to make me question whether I should even attempt to serve it to my food-loving child in fear of putting him off pasta with tomato sauce for life. After heating it up I tried it to gauge the temperature and I thought it tasted even worse than it looked. Bland, artificial and awful.
Despite the reservations, I still went ahead as I didn't have an alternative meal ready for my little one at that point. Unsurprisingly, my little man wouldn't even touch it. And when I did manage to put it in his mouth he promptly spat it out with disgust. I proceeded to make an alternative meal for him feeling like an awful parent for making my child try something that looked and smelled worse than dog food!
If your child is a good eater and enjoys food as much as my boy do not offend them or yourself as a parent by feeding them this! Definitely would not recommend. I tried other meals in that range and they were just as bad! I'm very surprised at how many positive reviews this product has. I guess it must depend on what kind of food your child is used to eating on a regular basis...
After having purchased several other cans of food from the Watties Little Kids range and having seen what a success these were with Miss 1, when I saw that they had brought another variety out onto the shelves I thought that it would be a nice change and seeming it was a cheesy ravioli I was pretty sure it would go down well as Miss just LOVES pasta, her favourite thing of all time.
It's not very often that I do serve up a out of the can dinner for Miss 1 but sometimes time just gets away from you and so this is the next best thing to having a hearty nutritional meal cooked from scratch to serve up. The fact that the Wattie's Little Kid range has no artificial colours or added preservatives makes me not feel bad about dishing it up and I also love that the sauce is tomato based which makes me feel as though she is still getting some type of vegetable into her. The pasta is easy to eat and is soft enough for littlies to chew without the risk of choking on not well cooked pasta, and when using the spoon gets to that boring point of the meal it is easy enough to use the fingers with, although being tomato based this does make a bit of a mess to clean up.
We always have a few cans of this in our cupboard and stock up when they are on special, even at now 2 years old my daughter still loves this Raviolli, though isn't too keen on the other cans in this range any more, referring to them as "baby food". Definitely a good fall back, fail proof dinner for when it's needed.
Let's face it sometimes I just don't have the time to cook a nutritious tasty meal for my busy one year old but I want to know that he is having something that is good for him and will fill his little tummy until the morning.
The Watties Little Kids range has been great for nights like this with my sons favourite being the Cheesy Ravioli. The pasta itself has a really nice taste in an almost spaghetti type sauce I could actually eat it myself. Mister independent likes to think he can feed himself but hasn't quite mastered the art of using a spoon but with these he can finger feed himself albeit a bit messily but they are easy to pick up with his fingers and pop in his mouth.
The can is a good price, I can buy a couple of cans a week and have them in the pantry as a back up quite easily and they are also a great size for a meal for children in the toddler age group so you don't get any waste but they get a full tummy at the same time.
