L'Authentique French Cheerios product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsMaking small people smile one sausage at a time.

Cheerios are to Kiwi kids parties what ducks are to water. Our imported Frenchmen had never seen a Cheerio before, and they were confused... it was a sausage, but where was the meat?

So, we made our own. The very best Cheerio for the very best parties. Because not knowing what is inside, should be reserved for "pass the parcel" not food.

Pre-cooked, these Cheerios need only be put in a pot of cold water and brought to a gentle simmer for 5 minutes.

Ingredients:
Free-farmed NZ pork, potato starch, nutmeg and sea salt.

Because I'm not sure what the price is, and I can't find them listed on the company website, I can't really speak to their "value for money" so I will have to base my rating on the vague memory of a price-range I saw at a recent food show that I think applies to these.

Considering the flavour - these are NOTHING like the saveloys, cocktail sausages, weeners, or whatever name you used when you were a kid... these actually have meat in them, and flavour, and that means you will either love them or hate them - there really isn't going to be much choice in the way of middle ground. Personally, I quite liked them, with heavy leanings towards loving them, because I am a dyed in the wool true carnivore, and if it has meat - real meat - then it's going to be on my "good to go" list until something takes it off.

These were very simple to cook, and again, not in the way you may have been used to. No pot full of bubbling, boiling water to drown them in for 10 minutes until their skin starts to peel. No... this time around the instructions say to pop them in a pot of gently simmering water, and leave them until the skins start to shrink away from the ends. You are warming them up, not cooking them a second time. I fell into the old ways a little, and left them in the pot a little too long, so they ended up being a wee bit waterlogged, but they still tasted great on their own, and pure magic with a dollop of tomato sauce.

I also tried a few in a long roll with some fried onion and mustard - American hotdog style - and they were perfect! I've never been a fan of the flavour of American frankfurters, so to replace them with 2-3 of these is a great option, in my humble opinion. Mr9 asked to try a couple, but because he grew up with the 'usual pap' version, he wasn't as keen as I was. He said they were OK, but he didn't want to finish the second one. More for me!

Overall, these will be a mixed bag, flip of the coin for most people. Those who are prepared to put aside old memories and try these as though for the first time will probably appreciate them far more than someone looking to rekindle childhood memories.
