I grew up watching Our World with David Attenborough on TV One, probably on a weekend evening before bed. I use to love watching it (aside from having to watch horrible scenes of animals eating animals and wondering why the film crew just let it happen). I learnt a lot about animals, plants, insects and the world in general. I got to see parts of our Earth I had never travelled to, in the comfort of my own living room. It allowed my active imagination to dream that little bit further too.

Roll on some 25+ years and David Attenborough is still broadcasting! Stll making amazing documentaries, using some of the most advanced cinematography to show us our world. My daughter is really into animals, and loves watching Attenborough's documentaries. So when the chance to review this DVD come up I couldn't let it slip away. This DVD offers an amazing collection of his work. I am actually amazed it is only $39.99, given it comes with three discs. and over 6 hours of footage! Okay, they aren't full series of each subject. But they are a really good selection of episodes from several series.

I put disc one on one afternoon this weekend. I let my daughter select which episode she wanted to watch. She chose one about the secret life of plants. This didn't surprise me because she has been studying plants at school and loves life cycle stuff. As we watched that first episode she lit up declaring some of the camera work AMAZING. She was a little weirded out by the fast moving vines, but once I explained the camera magic of time lapse filming she was fine.

We continued to watch other episodes and she watched quite intently, breaking only to create some artwork based on what she was watching (birds in particular caused her to start drawing). The only negative I found was that the specially shot intro for each episode was very short and some finished too abruptly. However, I'm just stoked with this DVD. It's an amazing collection and one we will watch and re-watch. Its especially great for when she wants to watch a documentary on BBC Knowledge channel, but there's no Attenborough on. Thanks KIWIreviews and Roadshow for solving that tantrum trap!
