I'm not a huge fan of Will Ferrell, and not really a fan of...(how do I say it, so I don't sound racist?) African American comedians?. Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Shawn & Marlon Wayans, Tracy Morgan, Chris Tucker, Wanda Sykes, all have a style of comedy that generally revolves around being loud, confused and/or angry. Will Ferrell is largely the same, and that style of comedy annoys me; his only difference is that he adds emotional to the list of loud, confused, and/or angry. This is perfectly shown by Will Ferrell's first action in the film, where he is in tears crying exaggeratingly loudly.
So needless to say, I was not expecting big things from this film. The constant barrage of advertisements for the film on television and the internet was frustrating enough. Yet, I ENJOYED IT. I figured I'd better capitalise that sentence to ensure people took my first paragraph to mean I hated it regardless. The overall premise of the story was simple. In fact, it is explained in a single sentence in the description above. Despite the simplicity of the plot, there was a lot of variety of scenes, and while it was a lot of slapstick comedy, and sexual innuendo, it got a few laughs out of me.
The film is by no means a family friendly film, containing visible penises, multiple instances of "keistering", and a near constant stream of swear words. I was almost disappointed by that part. Much of the comedy in this film could have been suitable for a younger audience, and as it did contain so many adult themes, I'm surprised they didn't take it further, towards the darker side. But the film was enjoyable. It was obvious who the villains were very quickly, and yet the film doesn't immediately take you to the point that you expect. It almost never reaches that point.
Bravo to the director. You have given me more faith in Will Ferrell as an actor. It reminds me of the 'Old School' film days. and to whoever made the promos to the film? Good job. You didn't show the best parts of the film in your promo.
So if you watch the advertisements and think that the film looks funny, you will love this film.
