I thought this book was a great idea for kids who like science, gross stuff (cos it is about poos and wees) and history. Its a little bit like the Horrible Science/Horrible History series, covering all the things you make or do with human waste and through the ages. It also reminded me a lot of a tv series we use to watch with Tony Robinson called The Worst Jobs in History, which more often than not involved the sewers.

So it was familiar ground for me, and a lot of the facts in the book I could recall from other sources. I liked the way it is set out in this book, really easy flow through history. The little tidbit facts scattered through were fun to refer to. It was a very entertaining read and one that my 5 year old enjoyed having read to her (she is into gross science!). I can tell we will end up reading and re-reading this over and over again.

John Kelly's illustrations are fun and cartoony. They bring the facts to life in this book, with five character guides throughout. He manages to get so much expression into the faces on each page. There are little fun finds and details to seek out.

At $24, this is a good buy. Its hard cover, the pages are nice and glossy. If your child likes this kind of thing, it would be well received. I did dry retch a couple of times reading, but I do have a weak stomach - it didn't stop our enjoyment though.
