The first book of the His Darkest Materials Trilogy.
When Lyra's friend Roger disappears, she and her daemon, Pantalaimon, set out to find him. They travel to the ice kingdoms of the North, where armored bears rule and witch-queens fly through frozen skies. Lyra possesses a device that will aid their quest - if she can decipher its mysterious messages. But it knows terrifying secrets about their journey, and the dangers that await them in worlds far beyond their own.
Adapted into the feature film - "The Golden Compass"

I had never read any fantasy books, so when i picked this up the first time i want to say i was pleasantly surprised at how engaging it was, but that is a mere understatement! I was so TOTALLY ENGROSSED in the book, i read it front to back almost non stop! And couldn't wait to start the next!
This is the first part in a three part series. Philip Pullman is slowly becoming very well known for this series, that is now being studied at university level. It sits right up there with Narnia, The Hobbit and Harry Potter.
It is a very complex story that uses the concept of 'Dust' - In this book we meet Lyra and her family and all the people's daemons. This is set in another world, although is very similar to the one we know. They have people like gyptions that we can allude to as gypsies and another form of electricity that pre-dates our own. Its a very old world, but very engaging.
You meet all sorts of characters, some nice, some deceitful and many interesting characters such as the armoured bear! It takes you across continents and is a real adventure / journey book! I found it very interesting that this is a children's/young adults book although there is no reason for it not to be, i guess i really was surprised at how much i really loved reading it! And the books keep getting better!!
