I tested this one with a friend's youngster, since our boys are either far too old, or far too young. The results were a surprise.
I personally thought that the volume on the toy was way too low to be of any use, but it is easy to understand that this is for the protection of the baby's hearing. Loud sounds at any age will damage the delicate cells in the ear, so risking the hearing of the babies is just plain silly, which makes me shocked when I hear the volume of some kids toys these days. Smart more, Lamaze! The toddler (almost 2yrs old) however though this was brilliant, and after only a few days he was starting to use other objects as phones and repeat the lines from this one! Brilliant!
Because of this, I would have liked to have seen more phrases in the unit, more in line with real-world conversations, however since it has a fairly basic, short list of 3 or so phrases (I can't be sure because of my age-damaged hearing, it's just too quiet for me), the phrases repeat often, which is what helps them stick in young minds. "They say repetition is good for the young mind." as Jimmy Neutron once put it.
Overall, though this toy doesn't appeal to *me* very much at all, to the target market it appears to be highly desirable... and at the end of the day that is the key factor to consider: Will it be attractive to the kids? Simple answer: Yes, it appears so.
