Freshlids product reviews

Freshlids are a revolutionary new way to seal containers of all shapes and sizes.

Made from modern silicon rubber, these lids come in a set of 5 assorted sizes, and will stetch up to double their resting size to fit even the most odd shaped bowl, or even directly onto the food itself.

Will seal to any dry surface, and they are excellent as replacements for lost lids, air-tight can lids, or over the ends of fruit such as melons or pineapples, or dog rolls to keep the odour at bay.

Fully washable, they are dishwasher and microwave-safe.

Sick of Gladwrap not sticking to my various bowls i thought that i would try out Freshlids. I was a bit dubious about them actually stretching as much as they state, but indeed they did. I used the smallest Freshlid to cover a small dish of left over beetroot, which was later knocked out of the fridge, i was so sure that i would have a lot of pink staining on my tiles but not a drop came out of the bowl! This is fantastic and i have already recommended to friends. Best of all they take up next to no space in the drawer. Big thumbs up.

I was quite surprised by these little wonders... looking like normal plastic, they are in fact highly durable, and felxible, silicon rubber. This allows them the fit a huge range of containers and objects. As a bit of an experiment, I filled a rather large plastic cup with coca-cola, notorious for being highly corrosive. As you can see in the photo above, it didn't leak a single drop... once I figured out how to get the lid onto the cup. (The cup is also highly flexible... tough at the best of times!)

It took me a few goes to get the hang of applying the lids correctly, however once I got the knack, it became quite easy to apply the lids to containers as diverse as square bowls, assorted sized cans, jars, cups and glasses. However, what became rapidly apparent was that these container and lids MUST be dry. Even moderate moisture will cause the lids to slip on smooth edges, making for one giant rubber-band-sting if you aren't quick enough to get hands out of range in a hurry.

As a bit of a test-of-theory, I popped into the supermarket and bought two of the cheapest tins of fruit I could find, headed home, pop the lids on them both, and placed a Freshlid over one, and a normal clip-on hard plastic lid on the other. Leaving them both on the back porch was risky, considering the number of roaming pets in the area, but I figured it was worth a try as I don't know many cats or dogs that would bother with a tin of fruit. I checked on them both daily, noting any discolouration, mould growth, etc.

It was quite apparent after only a few days that the standard lid wasn't really keeping the air out anywhere near as well as the Freshlids were, since the fruit in that can was quite foul well before any clear signs of mould even started to show on the Freshlid'd can. The Freshlid being clear also made it a lot easier for me to check the contents without having to break the seal... this could have been a key factor in slowing the breakdown of the fruit, extending it's (possible) useful lifespan.

Overall, these lids are quite possibly one of the smartest investments you could make. Not available in shops, you can obtain them direct from the supplier using the details listed above. You'll be surprised, and impressed, at the amount of stretch in these, and just how tough they are, so don't be afraid to aim to cover containers bigger than the apparent size of the lid. These things have a lot more give in them that you would expect.
