Fisherman's Table product reviews

Fishermans Table, Palmerston North - (06) 357 2157

This first floor restaurant offers views of 'The Square' and cityscape. The Nautical theme is complemented with old photos of the Foxton Wharf & Palmerston North. The dining area is set to cater for both large groups and casual diners. In 'knowledge' City it pays to know where to go for value.

As we entered we found the layout a little unusual. The main counter appears, at first glance, to be the bar. No freestanding reception desk in sight. However the 2 female staff members standing there chattering made us head that way regardless. As we approached one of them wandered off with a parting comment to the remaining one, who gave us a quick cursory greeting and then stared blankfaced at us.
I greeted her with a big smile and the request for seating for 2 adults and a child. I joked that it appeared there might be seating available, since at that time the restaurant was 2/3rds empty. Her response was quite terse, bordering on rude. Her face showed annoyance that we had interuppted her chat, that we were cheerful, that we requested service and food... that we were there at all.
However, she managed to find us a small table tucked away in a corner by the windows that looked out onto the central park of the city, so at least we had a nice view. Our waitstaff arrived, and at least she was smiling. She gave us menus, took our opening drink orders and left us to drool over the food options. After we (finally) decided we started off with some of their potato skin chips. These turned out to be exacty what the name suggests, the fried potato peelings. Talk about using every part of the beast. A little pricey for what they are, but really REALLY tasty with cheese and sour cream.
Later, a bit too much later, our main courses arrived. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. The Pork Loin was overcooked and quite dry, but the cranberry relish was quite a nice touch and helped to compensate. The Chicken Tenderloins were also overcooked and the coating was quite abrasive. Flavour was almost nonexistant. The best bit was the all-you-can-eat salad bar and even that was disappointing. After trialling Steak Out the night before, this was more affordable but far less satisfying.
The place had a nice atmosphere and there seems to be plenty of tasty options on the menu, we just didnt seem to hit any of them this time around. Not entirely UNhappy with the visit (those potato skins really were quite tasty) but cant really claim to have been all that impressed. Perhaps just caught them on a bad day, and the menu suggests we might have to go back again and see what happens this time. Wink Icon
