Hummel is a largely forgotten composer to the average listener, and still mostly unknown amongst more serious classical buffs, except perhaps, the devotees who long for a more relaxed age - one in which Mozart is still the only composer of repute.
Chandos have released an excellent recording of Hummel, more than capably played/conducted by Howard Shelley in this superb interpretation of Hummel's work, including a world premiere recording of Le Retour à Londres. The composition is faultless, as is Shelley's interpretation. The London Mozart Players ably assist Shelley in this performance.
The Booklet is well written, and provides plenty of information about Hummel and his life. The works are covered in detail to ably assist the new-comer to Hummel's work appreciate the finery of his music.
This release is an essential part of anyone's collection.
