Though I have become quite addicted to the game, in all it's simple pleasure, the theme of the decks is what makes each deck appeal, or not, to me. I never really got into the swing of Roald Dahl's books. However, once again this score is only low due to my personal preferences of this deck, the game and deck are both quite wonderful in their own right.
This deck has a twist I really liked, one that I think some of the comic-based decks should have adopted. At the bottom-left corner of each card is a colour-coded logo signifying which of Roald's many stories the particular character originates from. And what a selection! A whopping *9* tales are represented in this deck, from the more well-known Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG, through to the quite obscure The Giraffe, the Jelly, and Me and The Enormous Crocodile.
I was surprised to find characters I knew from movies such as Matilda and The Witches which I had no idea were based on Roald's books. So, goes to prove that you do learn something new every day!
Overall, this really is a good deck, with artsy, but clear texts and layout, lots of information and wonderful original artwork, and the same ease to play that all the other decks have in common. Another beaut winner, mate, really... just not my first choice of decks.
Though I am not a huge fan of RD's work, I have to admit that this deck really showcases his talent as an author, just by the sheer number of stories these characters are taken from. Funny artwork made my daughter laugh and she has started asking for some of RD's stories to be included in her list of bedtime story options. Time to go raid the 2nd hand bookshops I think. There is lots of info on these cards, so the game can slow right down with young kids playing, but so what? Isn't that what they mean by quality time, spending it doing something fun with your kids without a deadline?! This is a good deck and lots of fun.
