Raid the Pantry product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsIn the cooking-themed card game Raid the Pantry, for 2-4 individuals or two teams of two, players are dealt ingredient and dish cards at the start of play; over the course of the game, players need to collect the ingredients needed to make the dishes in hand. Each completed dish scores you 1-3 points, locks in its ingredients for reuse in other dishes, and allows you to take a new dish card.

Many years ago, the shop my mother worked at gave her an old copy of this game (mine has different illustrations) and it has remained a favourite of my now twelve year old since we added it to our collection. The concept seems easy enough but it does take a little while to get a handle on the rules. For example, when you complete a recipe, you place the ingredients and dish card down, however each ingredient card then counts towards ANY recipe card you now use. This was a bit confusing when we first began playing and I have found it is a slightly difficult notion for some people that I've played with, but once you eventually get the hang of it, you really just have to remember to keep checking every card that you've played so far.

The game features recipes from around the world and each card tells you which country it came from, a good thing to note here is that if you can, make multiple recipes from the same country for bonus points. I do find the pointing system a little off, with a four player game you need to hit 11 points to win, but we often end up running out of dish cards trying to get someone to that score, so we've taken to lowering the number of points required. Also, you have to continuously keep track of how many points you have as you don't write down the scores as you go.

This is a fun game which keeps you thinking, it's one I easily recommend to others.
