We have never really been a family that eats pickled products but this caught my eye to the fact it can be added to meals something I never thought of. The container is clean and attractive at the same time, saslyvi had a brain loss moment and tried pulling the lid off its clearly a twist I got it in the then.

Opening it up it smells great, the smoked tomatoes is what hit me the most and the chili. I tried it in a mince dish I added a few tablespoons but I couldn't taste it, we tried in a pasta dish and could taste smoked tomatoes but nothing else. I ended up putting it in the table with a pork meal and thought I would try it as a dipping sauce and it was yummy, pushed it into my mash potato and that gave my potato an extra taste. My 2 year old loved it and it was so easy for her to scoop it out herself to put on her plate and she ate it with her meal and just by teaspoon.

I like that the flavors arent overpowering so would be great on rice wheels, crackers etc but as a dipping sauce its great too. The container is nice and small but it seems to have heaps in it. I would buy it again as it will last a while just not something to add to my meals.

Anathoth Farm have never dissapointed me when I have bought any of their products from chutneys, and relishes to jams! They are always packed full of natural ingredients and full of delicious flavours. I was very excited to see these new pickles pop up on the KIWIreviews website and even more so excited on finding some inside my most recent review parcel. This Smoked Tomato, Chilli, and Chia Seed pickle turned out to be my new favourite.

I love tomato based pickles and relishes they are so versatile and can be used in so many ways. The addition of chilli in this gives it quite a nice kick, not too hot but you can definitely feel a bit of heat which I really loved. Like with the hemp seeds in the Cauliflower pickle you don't really notice the chia seeds in these you can see they are there but you don't taste them though having read about the health benefits of these super foods it is great to have them included in something I would use regularly. The tomato in this comes through strongly and while you can still taste a vinegar component it isnt as strong as the other pickles as the tomato adds a smoky and sweet taste.

I used this on home made beef burgers and it was amazing to use over a plain sauce, with the pickle taste it doubled both as a dressing for the salad and a sauce for the beef. Some of my sauce had dripped from my burger onto my plate and I decided to dip one of my fries soon enough I had to go get the container to put some more onto my plate as this was also delicious as a dipping sauce! I received three containers of the Anathoth pickles and this one has by far gone down the quickest as I have been using it a lot, in my sandwiches at lunch, on a cracker with cheese and as a sauce with meals!

When I saw these Anathoth pickles come up for review I was very excited, having previously consumed a fair amount of their items and so knowing that these were likely to be on a par with them - delicious, nutritious and a great addition to my 5+ a day vegetable intake.

Looking at the pot itself, it is a nice and generous 300 grams meaning it lshould last a little while, and meant I could try it in a few ways. The pot has a nice secure lid which is great for people like myself that have kids - not as much chance of the lid "popping off"and leaving the contents on my floor or in my fridge. The pot is clear so you can easily see which flavour it is straight away, and it shows clearly what is in it with the lovely picture on the front.

There are 3 big ingredients in this pickle - the tomato flavour is very strong, not to say it's overpowering as the chilli definitely gives it a kick but not so much to have you gasping and reaching for water. The chia seeds are more part of the saucey bit, but you don't really notice them (in a good way) and they add to the texture. This pickle is not like a couple of the others, with quite a tart kick to it, it has spice/heat but isn't sour.

I tried this first of all, like I have with the others - straight out of the container. I was not disappointed - and really enjoyed the amount of heat in it. Next I slathered it onto crackers and laid avocado on top. This was the perfect combo - the creamy avo really molded nicely with the chill kick. I have also tried it as an accompaniment with cheese, with raw vegetables, and even on macaroni cheese as a bit of flavour. With all of them it worked beautifully.

My summation is that this is a delicious, wholesome and very homemade tasting pickle. At the price of $4.99, for all the chopping and actual work I would have to do to make something like this - no thanks I would just buy this instead. I really look forward to trying all the others soon!

Anathoth Farm - Smoked Tomato, Chilli & Chia Seed Pickle was a great holiday bonus to spice up a few lunches and nibbles for guests. I have been a fan of Anathoth products in general for quite some time so was keen to see what was new and this is definitely new. It has Chia seed which I couldn't identify in a lineup and have to admit still not sure of. I felt it was probably the gimmick and point of difference in the name but realistically the smoked tomato was the lead item and most clear taste. I expected a pickle with quite a lot of heat and this was was there but not overpowering.

This made it perfect for plain crackers and cheese which seemed to work really well. The texture is quite runny so you really don't need much. It worked a treat with toasted sandwiches (again use less than you expect). I liked it in a few wraps over the holidays and it is a definite hit with the guests who liked it on an antipasto lunch platter.

Along with the smoked tomato the chia seed may have added a certain sweetness I think which is perhaps not to my personal taste but was a hit with guests. I have to also say that it wasn't ideal with avocado (probably a mistake on my part). Best with cheese!

Great value and a good size (enough for a few outings but not so much you don't know when you will use it. Probably a good holiday/summer choice as it goes with a lot of vegies and snacks. I thought the container opened and closed easily and there was no spillages so all in all a hit in our house. I guess the tub will be reused afterwards but we haven't got to the bottom and it may have been nicer in glass rather than plastic, but this is a minor comment.

Although there are three main ingredients in this product (smoked tomato, chilli and chia), there is no contest as to which is the dominant flavour: the tomato is the star with the chilli and chia seed simply playing supporting roles. We all tasted the pickle straight from the jar and were unanimous in deciding it was a really tasty enhanced tomato flavour; we were all happy to just keep eating it, but thought it might be better to have it with our dinner!

My friends had cooked some roast pork; with this we had red cabbage, new potatoes, carrots and broccoli. They normally serve apple sauce with this cut of meat, but we all thought the pickle would be fine on its own. Tomatoes are naturally sweet so we really did not need anything else; besides, the chilli was quite mild so it did not bother the three children who (like most children) are sometimes wary of anything that is too spicy. Even the youngest, Mr Five, told us he liked the new tomato sauce! Because the pickle is reasonably runny, we opted against putting butter on the potatoes as it was not needed - the pickle was enough.

I was staying with them overnight, so the pickle appeared on the table again at breakfast. The children were having bacon and eggs, and had decided without any adult prompting that they would have the "new tomato sauce" with it. I was amused to see how much they liked it; when I had brought it with me, I had intended to get the adults to taste it and give me some feedback. Having the children enjoy it as well was an unexpected bonus!

I was intending to leave during the morning but was persuaded to stay on for lunch as they were going to make cold roast pork sandwiches with the leftovers. And I did not need to ask - they were going to use the pickle again! I have always enjoyed meat sandwiches, and the prospect of having them prepared in this way was too much to resist. By the time lunch was over, the container was almost empty, and Mr Five was asking me if I was taking the last bit home with me. I told him I had not intended to take it away anyway - it was for them to keep. His response? "Well, you could have given us a full one then!" There is no reasoning with a five-year-old!
