We crowded round the windows
to see what we could see,
as it began to make a hole
where the pool would be...
The famous Little Yellow Digger is coming to school to dig a swimming pool! The children are hugely excited. And when the digger bursts a water main, they get an unexpected field trip! This is a new edition of a much loved favourite in this best-selling series.
The rhyming text is by Betty Gilderdale and the accompanying illustrations are by Alan Gilderdale.

The little yellow digger is a kiwi classic, and I was very keen to read the next instalment in this classic series. What immediately captivated me was that the little yellow digger is off to school. As a preschool teacher it's great to have 'natural' conversations about the big unknown 'school' with my pre-schoolers, normalising the next step for most of them in their learning journeys.
The book introduces many facets of daily school life, the playground, the teachers, the principle, the caretaker, the school bathrooms, and for some children the school pool. Linking a concept that for some children can be a little scary with a familiar and much loved character such as the little yellow digger is magical, it's a story that can be read and enjoyed many times, while subtly teaching the children more about daily school life.
Our preschool children loved the story, they were delighted with the cat who featured on nearly every page, and they raced to spot him in the illustrations. The images within the story were clear and represented a range of boys and girls, so the children could 'see' themselves within the pages. The text was rhyming and descriptive, and after reading the book a few times I had several children joining in with me 'reading' along and predicting the words based on the images on the page.
The story is endearing in its own right, there is a message that it's ok to make mistakes, but we need to persevere and push past them. But this is skilfully woven into a delightful and funny story, in which the school problem solves, no water, no problem, we shall have a picnic! This story has already become a favourite at preschool, and I'm sure that it will be a firm favourite with many pre-schoolers, who have been patiently waiting for another addition to the little yellow digger series.
Yes, I would purchase this for friends with preschoolers, as it's a great kiwi classic, and I think it's value for money as it will be read again and again.
Who doesn't love the little yellow digger? So when the little yellow digger goes to school, of course it's a book you want to read. The little yellow digger goes to school by Betty and Alan Gilderdale is another book in the little digger series. This time he's off to school to dig a swimming pool. The kids love seeing the little yellow digger at school but disaster is not far away. As he hits a water main and the water to the school has to be turned off to fix the break and the children get an unexpected field trip to the beach. As the trusty little digger does, the water main is fixed and he continues on to construct the pool for the school. And of course, the children love their new pool.
Miss five loved this book. She loves diggers and they have just had a digger building a walkway at her school so she could relate to the children watching the digger. She liked that the kids got to go on a trip. She also loved that she was able to read the book herself. Myself, I like the story but don't feel it is as good as the original little yellow digger story. This book is another good addition to the little yellow digger series. The illustrations are the classic little yellow digger pictures we have also seen throughout the series.
$18.99 seems to be the average for a kids picture book and think if you like the other little digger books it's worth the money. I would probably purchase this book especially for a child who likes diggers and the other little yellow digger books.
