The Baby-Sitters Club - Dawn and the Impossible Three product reviews

From quite a young age I have always been an avid bookworm, my parents would read to me daily when I was young. As I got older my father and I developed a Friday night routine, this involved going to the library where I would get the maximum amount of books able to be borrowed, then go grab some McDonald's from the drive-thru to take home to eat. In primary school I was reading at the top of my class and my love of books and reading is still strong and I seem to have passed the passion on to my daughter.

One of my favourite series to read was The Baby-sitters Club, so when I saw this book on KIWIreviews available to request I was keen to see how this graphic novel was different to the chapter book version, I also thought it would be a good way to introduce my daughter to the series.

Upon opening my box of review products, I was exceptionally pleased to see a copy of "Dawn and the Impossible Three" sitting on the top. I was instantly captivated by the cover, there was no doubt that it was a Baby-sitters Club book as the silver lettering really stood out. Further down the cover was the title of the book and author details. The image on the cover shows the baby-sitter surrounded by three children and she seems stressed, my daughter said the book looks like it would be funny.
Straight away I noticed the book was a decent size thickness, at 149 pages I thought that it would be perfect for my daughter and I to read over a couple of nights - boy was I wrong! She sat down while I was getting dinner prepared and had nearly finished by the time dinner was ready. Regardless of this we decided to still read it together.

When we started with the book my daughter liked all the pictures and said it helped her with her imagination towards the story. It was nice being able to put a face to each of the characters. This graphic novel was captivating and easy to follow, the pictures were well drawn and the story-line flowed easily. By the time we reached the end my daughter informed me that she would like to read some more of the series, as on the back cover there are pictures of the previous four stories. I am thrilled as my parents still have my Baby-sitters Club stories at their house.

I highly recommend this book as it is highly entertaining and easy to read due to the smaller amount of text to read. My daughter is 6 years old and thoroughly enjoyed it, she managed to read it in it's entirety in one sitting and she says that all young girls should read this.

A life time ago, (actually several life times ago) The Babysitters Club was my favourite book series of all time. I can vividly remember curled up on a pillow in the school library reading about the troubles and drama of what it took to run a Babysitters Club. I also remember my friends and I wanting to create our own club, which if I remember rightly, lasted a couple of weeks until the reality of looking after other peoples kids hit home. I remember having big discussions with my friends about what we had just read and how we could not wait to grow up a bit more.

When I saw this up for review I thought it would be perfect for my nine year old daughter to read. She is an avid reader but needs a new series to sink her teeth into. As soon as the book came she disappeared into her room and started reading, actually every chance she got before school, after school, during school, bedtime - so I was not surprised that she had finished it two days later. She enjoyed it so much that on Saturday we went down to our public library looking for more of the series to get out but they had all been checked out.

This morning was my turn and I was shocked to find it was done in comic book form. I had expected it to be just like the books of my memory, reading chapter upon chapter - but instead I was faced with pained faces, cheesy smiles, block letters and weird pictures. Then the issue of what lines to read when came upon me but I soon figured it out. The book itself is nice and easy and I had it finished in less than an hour. The story is perfect for preteens and it deals with a lot of issues that kids have today with divorce, dating parents, working parents, moving and all the other dramas kids find in their lives. All of the situations are handled very well and it gives a clear message that your friends will always have your back no matter what. It also helps that all of the characters are set out for you in the front of the book, so you have their image in your head from the beginning.

Where as comic book format is definitely not for me it was clearly a winner for my daughter. When I asked her about the story she told me everything from the plot of the story to all of their names and even various issues that occurred which really blew me away. When I asked her would she like to read the old school type with just words she declined and said she preferred the pictures to help her along. She has already reclaimed the book to reread again so it is definitely a ten out of ten for me.
