Just because you're gluten free doesn't mean you have to miss out on life's "little treats". At gftreets we're passionate about developing products that taste just as good (or better!!) than their wheat cousins and cater for a wide range of special dietary needs.
You'll find southern style coated chicken in the freezer at selected supermarkets and specialty stores for you to have on hand at home whenever the need arises.
Product reviews...
This was the last of the GF Treets products that I had to try out, but it turns out that I'd saved the best for last! I had an open packet of tortilla wraps to use up and decided the chicken would work well in wraps with some delicious summer salad ingredients.
Upon opening the box I noticed 2 things straight away - firstly that the pieces were quite brown in colour which surprised me, but I quite liked it. Secondly that the pieces varied hugely in size which was great for sharing around the different sized appetites in our family, but I wasn't sure how they'd cook evenly. I decided to use the air fryer as a healthy cooking option and they came out beautifully in 12 minutes and surprisingly were all cooked OK - the smallest one wasn't dried out as I thought it might be.
I put one piece in my wrap, but I couldn't help but taste test one on it's own too, and I have to say I was really surprised at how nice it was - the chicken wasn't dry, and the coating had a bit of flavour to it, unlike some of the boring chicken nuggets that are out there. Unfortunately MIss 8 was having a bad day and declared pretty quickly that she didn't like them, but I won't hold that against the product as I'm pretty sure in different circumstances that it's actually a product that would appeal to children well. My husband was pretty impressed too, which was big coming from him as he didn't like the fish pieces made by the same company.
I had cooked all the chicken up and found we had a piece leftover so decided to try it cold for my lunch the next day and I'm pleased to report that it hadn't dried out and was quite nice - also in a salad wrap. Although our family has no need for the allergy friendly properties of this product, I wouldn't have even realised that they were egg, gluten and dairy free (to list the main ones). Due to cost, I personally wouldn't buy these again as a regular option for our family, but I'll definitely keep them in mind if I need to cater for allergies. I can see them being a perfect allergy friendly product for picnics, birthday parties and lunches and dinner, and can highly recommend them on this basis.
We are huge fans of southern style chicken in our house and regularly purchase another brand of southern style chicken in our groceries, and although this is delicious the problem which it has is that it contains bones which really limits what you can do with this. When I saw this delicious looking southern style coated chicken up for review I was excited by the prospect of trying it, although none of my household is gluten free this didn't bother me.
Opening up the box I saw that the pack contained 8 well coated chicken tenders that did vary quite a lot in size. The instructions on the box have options to cook these pieces of chicken either by frying them in a fry pan or by baking them in the oven, however I was running short on time I choose to pop them into the actifry for 12 minutes, that way I could leave them unattended to do their thing while I prepared the rest of dinner. After just 5 minutes of cooking I was hit by the lovely aroma of the spices from the southern style coating it smelt absolutely amazing and I couldn't wait to try them. In no time at all the timer beeped letting me know the chicken was cooked and opening the lid of the actifry I was impressed by the beautifully coloured golden pieces of chicken, that had crisped up perfectly, and kept their size and shape during the cooking process.
I served 6 of these up for dinner, 2 for each member of my family along with a side of chips, salad and of course some dipping sauce I used tamarillo chutney with mine along with a dollop of mayonnaise, while my partner and Miss 3 choose to have steak sauce. The taste of the chicken was absolutely delectable, and I loved that the chicken was made from REAL chicken there was certainly nothing processed about these, the chicken was lovely and tender and had just the right amount of spices and herbs all encased in a lovely thin, crispy batter, there was no knowing that these were a gluten free product with the rest of my family who quickly gobbled them down. My partner loved them so much that he asked me to buy them again at the supermarket, Miss 3 appeared to love her chicken also however she did tell me she didn't like the "pepper" in them.
For lunch the next day I made my partner and myself each a chicken wrap using the 2 remaining chicken pieces, these created such an amazing flavour served this way along with some lettuce, tomato, cucumber and cheese, a quick and easy lunch. I was a bit worried about how these may reheat but am happy to report they reheated really well as though they were freshly cooked.
With several of my friends being gluten, egg and peanut free these are something I most definitely plan to have handy in my freezer for on occasions when they stop by for dinner, the only problem i'm fearing I may have is stopping my partner from cooking these up before this happens! It is great that these cater for so many allergies, providing such a great tasting snack or meal for those who do have allergies, best of all the product is xso versatile and can be served as is, or perhaps with a salad , in burgers or in wraps.
I don't know what I expected gluten free chicken to taste like, but I was not prepared for the amazing flavour that hit me on the first bite. Tender, tasty - I could have eaten the whole packet by myself and forgotten about serving it with any other food, so it is just as well I had guests to feed too! I served it with oven chips sprinkled with plain sea salt and stir-fried silver beet and onions flavoured with teriyaki sauce and extra garlic. The combination was just right as it allowed the flavour of the chicken to come through.
The coating was very tasty - unobtrusive, but with enough added spice to enable the chicken taste to come through. I have tasted similar coatings before when I have eaten takeaway chicken, but this had none of the greasiness or slight chemical aftertaste that you get from a mass-produced item. I also would comment that, although this product is quite expensive, it is still cheaper than its takeaway counterpart and you know what you are getting - plus, there are no bones; this is 100% meat!
The added bonus, of course, is that this is a gluten free product so it is a useful item to have in the freezer for guests who are gluten intolerant. I have friends who are vegetarian, friends who have problems with specific ingredients like gluten or sugar, friends who have dietary restrictions on religious grounds, and friends who are just plain fussy. I guess we all do! So it is nice to have a range of user-friendly foods available that are easy to prepare and are suitable for a wide cross-section of diners.
Even if I were not conscious of frequently catering for a variety of friends, I would buy this product for myself. Quite simply, it is worthy of a place on the best menu. I think the only addition I might make next time would be to include a blob of cranberry sauce or redcurrant jelly as this would enhance the flavour further. However, it is not really necessary: the product speaks for itself. I look forward to seeing this range in every supermarket frozen goods area as dietary variations go mainstream.
My husband usually cooks dinner in our house but lately he has been working overtime and I will often get a message at 5:30pm telling me I need to cook dinner. This means I need to have something ready quickly that requires no effort as I am usually in the middle of getting the kids to do their homework. Gftreets Southern Style Coated Chicken were a Godsend the other night.
They are so quick to prepare, simply preheat the oven, then bake for 6-7 minutes each side. I threw some oven chips in with them and added a salad and dinner was done. I am thinking next time to make it even quicker I could cook them in my sandwich press as preheating the oven was the most time consuming part. The smell when it was cooking had the children (and me) keen to try them.
When I served it up the chicken was much darker than the photo on the box but still looked appealing. Miss 6 said "Yum. I didn't know we were having KFC for dinner. When did you go to KFC?" All four of us enjoyed the chicken. It add a nice taste, not as strong as KFC and certainly not as greasy. The box was the ideal size for the four of us although the box does say it serves 6. The pieces were small and boneless so were ideal for the kids.
I would not have believed that it was allergen free if I hadn't seen the box. Although none of my household have food allergies we have friends and family that do and it is good to know that I can serve a meal that everyone can enjoy. One mum describes her daughter's diet as gluten free, dairy free and fun free but with this chicken it doesn't have to be that way.
These gluten free gftreets were the last of my selection of four to try and I was as impressed with the packaging on these as with the others. a net weight 300 grams was a good amount for our family of five and I liked that the ingredients in these were pretty much what I use if I was going to try to make these myself.
I wasn't too sure about how this would taste especially as the pieces when I opened the box looked a funny colour and not very appealing. I dutifully followed the instructions however and put them on the oven tray for about 15 minutes and when my test piece was cooked took them out. they smelled amazing and had improved significantly in how they looked.
I put the pieces out and we sat down for dinner. The chicken coating was absolutely amazing, It was even better than a well known brand of chicken and I was completely hooked. The chicken itself was incredibly moist and very tasty. We all loved the chicken and in a rare moment in our house everyone completely finished their dinner. We all agreed that this was definitely worth purchasing again.
I had a look online on the gftreets website and discovered that this was stocked at a supermarket near us but unfortunately the supermarket claimed to not be stockists. I will continue to try to source these however as they are so good. I can't comment on value as I am not sure how much these cost per box but I will say that they are absolutely delicious and mouth watering good and I am looking forward to having them again. I can definitely recommend them and I hope that gftreets gets a foothold in the frozen food market so these become more widely available.
Chicken... one of those all-purpose foodstuffs that clever people are always finding new ways to explore, transform and enhance. One of the most famous chicken-related brands has some amazing treats that look very similar to these, but are slathered in gluten-bearing flour and an unknown assortment of herbs, spices and other additives that remain undisclosed. To that end... I'm far more inclined towards these even though I'm not in need of GF foodstuff.
To increase the healthy-rating of the meal, I opted to cook these in the bench-top oven rather than fry them, and though it took a little more time, I found this gave me a really nice, tasty and healthy snack that I could share with Mr8. He thought they were as good as the big-brand chicken treats, and he had no idea they were anything special, other than a special reward for good behaviour. He said they tasted really good, he liked them a lot, and he wanted more.
While he wanted his dipped in tomato sauce, I dipped mine in a chilli sauce mix that I had made myself, and that really brought out the flavour for me. However these would go equally well with a fruity mango sauce, apricot sauce, or even a sour cream dip with some chilli and lime mixed through. Great as finger food, I thought they were a little too narrow and long to be cutlery-food. I really would see these more as party snacks more than a meal element... but that's just my opinion.
Overall, a very tasty treat well worth the price if you have a gluten-intolerant member of the family, or have GF visitors coming over. However, for those just wanting to explore a lower-gluten diet, these may be worth trying to see if you feel the price fits with you. I would also love to see a variety come out that has a spicier coating, for those who like it zingy!
