This book, in its various incarnations, has been a classic staple of the kiwi kitchen shelf for longer than I care to remember. I fondly recall, as a nipper, my mother teaching me to bake cheese scones using a recipe in the cookbook. I'm really happy to see that the recipe is still in there, after all the new additions, and removal of less popular recipes, over the years. It's one of those recipes that I can never seem to make properly unless I am reading it from the book.
Some of the recipes I saw in this edition look spectacular, and its great to see updates to some classics. There's some awesome, contemporary recipes in this edition that could easily become classics too. Some of the more intriguing ones that caught my eye include Coconut Chilli Rice - because I love rice and chilli, so this sounds very intriguing - and Fish Cooked En Papillote (in Paper) - these two sound like they would really complement each other, serving the fish on the rice. -yum- Another appealing one is a recipe for Raita - a traditional Indian cucumber yoghurt sauce. While I'm no great fan of yoghurt, I do love Raita with a good spicy curry.
The look of the book has changed a number of times over the years, but the iconic 'sunburst' its still there, making this instantly recognisable even to older generations. While I appreciate that all things, even book cover designs, must evolve to stay invigorated, it's somehow soothing to see something remaining familiar.
Overall, this is one of those amazing things that changes, but somehow stays very much the same. Retaining all of the character and integrity built up over the years, this it's a great addition to your cookbook shelf, even if you have a copy in there already.
