At the local bookshop during one of there sales on children's books my daughter (2 years old) was immediately drawn to this book due to the illustrations of the bright red tractor, and various farm animals a sheep, duck, mouse, cat, cow and turkey. The name 'The Gobble Gobble Moooooo Tractor Book' made the book sound like a lot of fun, and when I saw that Jez Alborough was the author I thought it was sure to be a hit without a doubt, so straight into the shopping bag it went!
As soon as we arrived home Miss 2 demanded that I read her this book, and to be honest I was more than happy to sit and read it to her as I was rather looking forward to it myself! The story is about a farmer who is so busy sleeping that he doesn't realise that his farm animals have worked together to get his tractor going and haven taken off on it. The animals all have a special part to play in this and all do there own bit for example the cat makes the sound that the engine makes when it starts to wiggle and jiggle and the turkey makes the sound that the tractor makes as it takes off down the lane. This book had awesome graphics throughout it bright and colourful with lots of happy, smiley, friendly looking animals. It demonstrated some great messages throughout such as the importance of team work and working with others and also shows us as parents and teachers how imaginary play can be and the benefits of this to children.
My daughter absolutely loved this book, as did I, it was such a delightfully funny book to read with lots of different animal and vehicle sounds being made which she just loved to copy, she kept asking if we could read it again and again "just like the book says Mummy, let's do it again" (the animals kept asking to make the tractor start again and again. A very easy to read story that young children can easily pick up the words of and begin to join in with themselves.
One of the really neat feature near the end of this book is the double side out pages, which spread out to look like 4 opened pages, making a great big poster, which features a picture of each of the animals and large writing of each of the animals sounds, a fun dimension to add to the book. Another thing that I really liked about this story which captured my attention is the font used throughout the book, it is quite a funky font with the animal names always being written in bold and the animal sounds been written in big balloon fonts to make them really stand out.
I would totally recommend this story as a gift to any animal loving, farm loving, tractor loving child or as a great resource for any Early Childhood Teacher, it certainly provides a lot of laughs and fun.
