We are huge fans of butter chicken in our household, in fact whenever the man of the house gets the chance to pick whats for dinner butter chicken is always his choice. It's often hard to find a butter chicken sauce that is exactly how we want it, and one that compares to that of a Indian takeaway restaurant. We have searched for and tried many brands and different types of butter chicken sauces and mixes on the market, those in jars, those in packets, and those in powder form and all though these are most often nice tasting they are never quite what we are after.
During a recent supermarket shop I saw that Maggi had brought out a new range of stir fry and curry sauces, on this occasion I purchased the honey, soy and garlic stir fry sauce and used it as a flavour base for a chicken stir fry, it was absolutely amazing. So when Mr requested butter chicken for dinner a couple of weeks ago I remembered seeing the new Maggi butter chicken sauce on the shelf and knew it was worth giving a go after the results I had with the stir fry sauce.
The directions on the packet seemed simple and easy to follow with just 4 easy steps - tear it, release the spices, cook it, finish it. The way that the butter chicken was cooked was different to those I had tried in the past in several ways, the packet teared in half with a spice paste on one side and a finishing sauce on the other. The other thing I found to be quite funny was that rather than cooking the chicken first as you would usually expect to do you 'release the spices' this involves heating some oil in a fry pan and then adding the spice paste and heating this for 1 minute or until fragrant before adding the chicken!
The chicken smelt so good as it cooked and I couldn't help but give it a taste test. The sauce was creamy and smooth due to the addition of thickened cream and had the perfect balance of spice and a tomato taste. it was in my opinion very similar to that of an Indian takeaway if not better! Due to the addition of tomato paste you could probably adapt this to suit your taste, making it more or less tomato in taste, though I found the packet amount to be perfect for us. Served with boiled rice and hot fresh naan bread this was a real winner.
