This book has been a huge hit at our house over the past couple of weeks and we have read it near every day. My 3 year old son has just got to the age where he is obsessed with parties and birthdays and especially presents so this was very appealing. Reading it he is talking about his party and what presents he will have so it definitely stirs up excitement.

Pig is having a party for his birthday and he makes the theme all about ducks and everyone brings their own duck sort of like a teddy bears picnic which my son thought was very cool. The pictures told a bit of a storyline in themselves so we could sort of read the pictures and talk about all the cool duck decorations Pig had at his party. My three year old decided he would like a tractor party!

I like how at the end Near decides to make his party a Bring your Elephant party as this got us talking about what sort of things Bear might have at his party too. I love that this book gives you so much to talk about on the topic of birthdays and would make a great birthday present to a young child. Bring a duck is an exciting read for young children because let's face it when your young birthdays are one of the most exciting things you do.

This book has been a huge hit and I am pleased to have it on our bookshelf for sharing with my children!

"It's a duck, a duck. It's a duck, mummy. Mummy! Mummy? It's a duck", this is how my Miss 3 announced the book for bedtime the other night. There she was, holding onto this book and pointing madly at the duck on the cover in green. She was very insistent and cute so of course I had to read it for her.

We sat down and I told her the book was called "Bring a Duck". We wondered what we needed to bring a duck to. So we flipped the book open and read through as Bear gets an invite to a party where he has to take a duck. The party itself looks so much fun. It's like a carnival circus but with ducks everywhere. It was super endearing, and Miss 3 really exercised her pointing finger to show me ALL the ducks.

The end shows Bear trying to come up with a cool party theme for his own party and the invite out to his friend Pig. This was really neat because although we didn't get to see Bear's party, we could stop and think about what he would have there for the theme. We imagined all the games that would be played and the food as well. It was fun to think about, especially because I am a bit of a party mad planner at our house.

Since this book came home, Miss 3 has been obsessed with her birthday. Which is a bit difficult because she is 9 months away from it. She asks me about her cake and what she will have and what theme to have. This book would be a brilliant birthday present for a child. It's definitely more about the pictures than the words, which makes it easy enough to enjoy across the age group at our house. Miss 3 though, has been guarding this book so Miss 8 hasn't had a chance to read it herself, though she has been allowed to hear it.

Product image for Joseph Anton: a MemoirOn 14 February 1989, Valentine's Day, Salman Rushdie was telephoned by a BBC journalist and told that he had been 'sentenced to death' by the Ayatollah Khomeini. For the first time he heard the word fatwa. His crime? To have written a novel called The Satanic Verses, which was accused of being 'against Islam, the Prophet and the Quran'. So begins the extraordinary story of how a writer was forced underground, moving from house to house, with the ... more...
